Hamilton Bulldogs News Release
HAMILTON, ON - The Hamilton Bulldogs announced today that the Club will honour former public address announcer and long-time CHML radio broadcaster, Bill Sturrup on Tuesday, January 15th, 2008 when they take on the Peoria Rivermen at Copps Coliseum. Sturrup passed away last year on January 16th, 2007 after a courageous battle with cancer.
Bill's wife Kathy, daughter Deb, son Mike, daughter-in-law Josie, and grandson Wolfgang will drop the puck during a pre-game ceremony featuring a commemorative collage on the scoreboard. The family will also be presented with a special gift prior to the game. Throughout the course of the night, a recording of Sturrup's trademark "And here are your Hamilton Buuuulllldogs" will be used to introduce the team to the ice.
Sturrup served as the 'Dogs public address announcer and an off-ice official since the teams inaugural season in 1996-1997. From his seat at ice-level between the home and away penalty boxes, for 11 seasons, Sturrup not only announced goals and penalties, he also introduced players, officials and special guests. In a pre-game ceremony on October 6th, 2006, the Bulldogs, in conjunction with the City of Hamilton, honoured the Dundas resident by naming the press box at Copps Coliseum "The Bill Sturrup Press Box".
For more than 45 years, Sturrup delivered news and sports to Hamiltonians on AM radio station 900 CHML. In 2004, Sturrup's professionalism, passion and dedication were recognized by CHML when he was inducted into the stations Hall of Fame. Sturrup also mentored hundreds of broadcasters, including Hamilton Bulldogs Colour Commentator Al Craig, who worked with Sturrup for more than 25 years at CHML. Sturrup was also involved with countless community initiatives including the Canusa Games, Golden Horseshoe Athlete of the Year, Hamilton Cardinals, Hamilton Thunderbirds and Hamilton Jr. Red Wings.
