
Buchholz Selected to MLB Futures All-Star Game

Portland, Maine- Portland Sea Dogs' pitcher Clay Buchholz has been selected to play in the 2007 XM Satellite Radio All-Star Futures Game at AT&T Park in San Francisco, California on Sunday, July 8th. Jacoby Ellsbury who began the year with the Sea Dogs was also selected. The team is selected by Major League Baseball in conjunction with Baseball America and all 30 Major League clubs. The XM Satellite Radio All-Star Futures Game, which will be broadcast live on ESPN2 at 4:00 p.m. on July 8th, features the top prospects in Minor League Baseball, with a team of U.S.-born players competing against players from around the world, as a showcase of the great international talent throughout baseball. Every Major League organization is represented with at least one player. Both Buchholz and Ellsbury will play for the U.S. team, which will be managed by Dave Winfield.
Buchholz has posted a 5-2 record in 13 games with the Sea Dogs this season. He leads the Eastern League in ERA (1.82) and strikeouts (100). Entering the season he was the third ranked prospect in the Red Sox organization by Baseball America. In 2006, he posted a combined record of 11-4 with a 2.42 ERA between Single-A Greenville and Single-A Wilmington. He led Red Sox farmhands with a 140 strikeouts and was named the Red Sox Minor League Pitcher of the Year. The 22-year old right hander was drafted by the Red Sox in the sandwich round, 42nd overall in the June 2005 draft.
Ellsbury appeared in 17 games with the Sea Dogs this season hitting .452. He was named the Eastern League Player of the Month for April and earned a promotion to Triple-A Pawtucket. In 41 games with the Pawsox, Ellsbury is hitting .279. Ellsbury has stolen 27 bases between Double-A Portland and Triple-A Pawtucket this season. The 23-year old was drafted in the first round (23rd overall) in the June 2005 draft.
Sea Dogs that have participated in the Futures Game in the past include Edgar Martinez (2006), Todd Claus (2005 & 2006), Hanley Ramirez (2005), Juan Perez (2004), Jorge De La Rosa (2003), Ron Johnson (2003), Kevin Youkilis (2003), A.J. Burnett (1999), and Pablo Ozuna (1999).
