Steven Pearce Selected To Participate In MLB Futures Game

ALTOONA- Curve first baseman Steven Pearce has been selected to participate in the 2007 Futures Game, which will be held in conjunction with Major League Baseball's All-Star Weekend, it was announced on Thursday. Pearce is among 30 minor leaguers selected to take part in the ninth annual Futures Game which will be contested Sunday, July 8th, at 4 PM at AT&T Park in San Francisco, CA. The Futures Game will be broadcast live on ESPN2.

Major League Baseball, in conjunction with all 30 clubs, works with Baseball America and MLB.com to determine the players invited to the kick-off event for All-Star weekend. The Futures Game is contested between rosters comprised of U.S. born prospects and those born anywhere else in the world.

Pearce, who will play for the United States team, is one of two Pittsburgh prospects chosen to participate in the Futures Game. RHP Serguey Linares will represent the Pirates' organization for the World team.

Pearce is currently hitting .311 with nine home runs and 39 runs batted in for the Curve. Pearce began the season by batting .347 in 19 games with class-A Lynchburg. Pearce led the minor leagues with 11 home runs during that time and also drove in 24 runs. The 24-year-old is currently batting a combined .322 with 20 home runs and 63 RBI for the 2007 season.

Entering today, Pearce was leading the Eastern League in Slugging Percentage (.579). Pearce entered the season rated by Baseball America as the #6 prospect in the Pittsburgh Pirates' organization.
