Buccaneers win in shootout
January 23, 2016 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Des Moines Buccaneers News Release
The Des Moines Buccaneers overcame an early 2-0 victory, battled to overtime, and won the shootout against the Muskegon Lumberjacks to win 4-3.
Rem Pitlick showed why he leads the USHL in points and goals as he struck for two goals in the first four minutes for the Lumberjacks at 3:25 and 3:57 of the first period for his 23rd and 24th goals of the season. Despite the fast start on the scoreboard, Muskegon was not able to get many shots on goal during the first period, just six in the opening 20 minutes, while the Buccaneers put 17 on net and it was the 17th and final of the period that finally got the Buccaneers on the scoreboard. Up along the left wing boards Georgy Gorodetsky hit Zach Jordan in between the circles and Jordan fired a shot that stayed on the ice and beat Muskegon goalie Joey Daccord blocker side with just 17 seconds left in the period to go into the locker room trailing 2-1.
Des Moines wasn't able to get nearly as many pucks to the net in the second period but again were able to get one past Joey Daccord. Down a man after a roughing call, Buccaneers defenseman Nick Wolff stole the puck just inside his blueline and started out on a two-on-one and then saucer passed a puck to Zach Jordan who cut in on Daccord with speed and beat the netminder 5-hole at the 7:50 mark. Daccord made seven saves in the period on eight shots on goal while Nick MacNab stopped all seven shots he saw.
Alec Rauhauser gave the Bucs their first lead of the game at the 7:53 when he cut in through the right faceoff circle and had his shot partially deflected but that caused it to arc over Daccord and into the net. That lead would stand for almost ten minutes until he was matched by Muskegon's top scoring defenseman Trevor Hamilton who scored at the 16:43 mark of the period to force overtime.
Back and forth action in overtime, including a power play chance for Des Moines in the extra session, but neither side was able to score in the overtime session and for the third time on the season the Bucs went to a shootout. Neither team scored in the first round but Collin Adams gave Muskegon the lead in the second round. MacNab made a stop in the third round and David Keefer converted to keep the shootout going. Nobody was able to get one past the goalies in the fourth but after MacNab stopped Max Humitz in the fifth round Ty Pelton-Byce scored to give the Bucs the win. Des Moines stays perfect in shootouts on the year.
Up next for the Buccaneers is a home contest against the Sioux City Musketeers on Saturday, January 30th, on Wine, Women and Hockey Night.
