January 23, 2016 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Sioux Falls Stampede News Release

Green Bay, WI-A rough third period by the Stampede led to a 6-3 loss to the Green Bay Gamblers Saturday night at the Resch Center. Lawton Courtnall scored twice while Josh Passolt added another for the Herd who fell 2-1 to Green Bay on Friday and were swept in their weekend series. Stefanos Lekkas stopped 27 of 33 shots on the night for the Stampede who are now 17-17-2 on the season and in fourth place in the Western Conference.

The Herd wanted to avoid a first period like the night before and early it looked as though they would as the Herd came out with great energy and killed off an early penalty, but the Gamblers would strike first at 11:30 when Marc Michaelis wristed a shot from the left point through traffic and past Stampede goaltender Stefanos Lekkas to make it a 1-0 game. 22 seconds later the Gamblers extended their lead to 2-0 when Christopher Grando sent a pass in front of the net to Connor Murphy who found the back of the net to give the Gamblers a two-goal edge. It wouldn't stay that way for long as the Herd responded with a goal of their own less than a minute later when Csnad Erdely sent a pass to Josh Passolt who skated the puck over the Green Bay blue line to the right point where he blasted a shot past Gamblers netminder Adam Huska and cutting the score to 2-1. Green Bay outshot the Herd 15-5 in the period.

Sioux Falls came out with great energy again in the second, but ran into penalty trouble that had them in the box most of the second period. Lean Bergmann received a five-minute major penalty and game misconduct for head-butting at 7:35 into the period. With the Herd down a man, Csnad Erdely broke free on a breakaway, but was hooked and awarded a penalty shot. Erdely tried to beat Huska on the glove side, but was denied and the score remained 2-1. Less than a minute later the Gamblers would take a 3-1 lead when Jack Poehling held the puck to the left of Lekkas and sent a pass across the crease to brother Nick Poehling who slapped the puck past a sliding Lekkas. Things got strange as the period went on as the Herd were given back-to-back penalties, putting the Gamblers on a 5-on-3 advantage for over a minute. Sioux Falls was able to kill off the penalty, but it took away and chance of the Herd getting back into the game as Sioux Falls still trailed 3-1 at the end of two periods.

Things got away from the Herd early in the third as Brett Gruber wristed a shot past Lekkas at 5:22. Less than three minutes later Josh Dunne found the back of the net and quickly it was a 5-1 lead for the Gamblers. The Stampede never quit though and got back into the game at 11:41 on the power play when Lawton Courtnall drove down the left wing wall into the left circle and wristed a shot under the right arm of Huska. Less than two minutes later it was Courtnall again this time Jack Doremus sent the puck into the left circle and Courtnall dove for the puck, getting it on net and past Huska to make it a 5-3 game. The Gamblers would squash any hope of a comeback however, scoring their sixth goal of the night, on the power play, to take the game 6-3.

Green Bay outshot the Herd 10-9 in the third period and 33-24 in the game. The Gamblers finished the night 2-for-6 on the power play while the Herd were 1-for-4.

Sioux Falls will look to get back on track next Friday and Saturday when they travel to Waterloo for a pair of games at Young Arena. Game times are 7:05 PM each night and fans can catch both games on KELO News Talk 1320-AM, 107.9-FM and online at KELO.COM.
