February 4, 2017 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Des Moines Buccaneers News Release
The Buccaneers were able to take the lead in the second period but that would be the only goal they could muster as the fell at home to Dubuque 3-1 Friday.
The Des Moines Buccaneers applied pressure early in the contest as they fired the first seven shots on goal and outshot Dubuque 10-5 in the first period but were unable to capitalize with that advantage and the period ended scoreless. Neither team took a penalty in the opening twenty minutes and we'd go into the 2nd period tied 0-0.
Tommy Parrottino got the scoring started on a pass from Julian Napravnik and skating in with speed from the left side he roofed a shot over Jaxon Castor's blocker 10:15 into the second period. Less than a minute later Dubuque would answer as Cole Guttman slapped home a Zach Solow pass from in tight to the right of Buccaneer goalie Jan Ruzicka's right to tie the game at one. Des Moines was able kill off back-to-back penalties in the second and drew their first power play of the game that would roll over into the third.
Dubuque would claim the game winner on a power play goal 9:04 into the final period as Zach Solow tapped home a loose puck that several Fighting Saints were poking at to go up 2-1. The lead would double to 3-1 on a blast from the right point from Patrick Kudla at the 12:51 mark and Des Moines was unable to respond despite getting 15 shots in the third period.
Dubuque improves to 26-10-1-2 on the season while Des Moines falls to 21-13-1-3. Castor made 34 saves in the win while Ruzicka had 24 stops in defeat. Up next for the Buccaneers is a home contest against the Madison Capitols on Saturday, February 4th. The game is part of Military Appreciation Weekend sponsored by the U.S. Army. Any military members, current or former, with military ID will get free admission to the game as well as the ability to purchase $6 tickets for those in their group. For tickets call 278-2827
