CEDAR RAPIDS, IA - The Madison Capitols gave up a third period lead and fell to the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders, 3-2, at Cedar Rapids Ice Arena on Friday night.
Madison (15-20-1-1) is ranked eighth in the Eastern Conference with 32 points. Cedar Rapids (6-30-1-1) is in ninth place the Eastern Conference with 12 points.
With 1:23 remaining in the game, left wing Liam Walsh scored his third goal of the season to give Cedar Rapids the win. Center Mark McLaughlin passed the puck from the left wing half-wall to a wide-open Walsh in the slot. The forward's first shot was stopped by netminder Dryden McKay, but his second attempt flew over the goaltender and into the net for the 3-2 win.
The RoughRiders lit the lamp first with forward Bobby Hampton's sixth goal of the season at 2:55 of the opening frame. Hampton passed the puck to defenseman Benjamin Foley who was inside the left point. Foley shot the puck on net and McKay made the pad save. The puck bounced into the slot for Hampton to chip over McKay and the early 1-0 lead.
Madison answered back less than two minutes later. At 4:44 of the first period, left wing Mick Messner tallied his seventh goal of the season. Center Eetu Selanne carried the puck into the RoughRiders zone from the right point. The puck was poked away from Selanne briefly before Messner scooped it up and wristed a shot that beat goaltender Drew DeRidder on his glove side to tie the game 1-1.
Left wing Alec Broetzman gave Madison a 2-1 advantage with his eighth goal of the season at 8:36 of the second period. Broetzman stole the puck away from RoughRiders defenseman Jakub Sirota at the right point of the Capitols zone. Broetzman skated in all along on DeRidder before backhanding a shot over the sprawling netminder for the one goal lead.
Defenseman Benjamin Foley tied the game at 9:47 of the final stanza. Skating on the power play, defenseman Riese Zmolek passed the puck to Foley in the right face-off circle for the one-timer that beat McKay and tied the score at 2-2.
McKay (13-10-0-1) took his 10th loss of the season stopping 20-of-23 shots. DeRidder (5-15-0-0) earned his fifth win of the season with 21 saves on 23 shots.
Madison went 0-for-2 on the power play. Cedar Rapids was 1-for-4 with the man advantage.
Notables: Goaltender Dryden McKay started in his eighth consecutive game and is 5-3 in those games...Left wing Alec Broetzman's eighth goal tonight ties him with center Kevin O'Neil for second place on the team this season in goals scored...Tonight was only the second time this season the Capitols have lost when leading after two periods.
