Last Time Out:
Omaha went past regulation for the eighth time this season, but they didn't need much of the overtime period as Derek Hamelin scored 0:59 into OT giving Omaha the 2-1 victory on Friday night in Lincoln. The victory was the Lancers first over the Stars this season.
A scoreless tie was played into the second period before Austin Alger gave the Lancers the 1-0 lead. As time expired on an interference penalty to Austin Alger, Josh DeLuca threw a quick pass the length of the neutral zone connecting with Alger. The forward walked in from the blue line beating Josef Korenar high for the lead. Lincoln answered back before the period ended with a power play goal to tie the game at 1-1. After sixty minutes of play the game remained tied at 1-1.
Early in the overtime Pierce Crawford broke into the zone, eluding the Star defense. Crawford found Derek Hamelin pinching down from the point, and Hamelin capitalized on the opportunity. Hamelin's shot only 0:59 into the extra period gave Omaha the 2-1 victory.
Head-to-Head:
Austin Alger continued his goal-per-game pace against Lincoln this season scoring the opening goal in Friday's overtime victory. Alger leads all Lancers skaters against the Stars this season. Derek Hamelin (1g, 1a) Jack Randl (1g, 1a) and Pierce Crawford (2a) are all second in scoring against Lincoln with a pair of points each. Tommy Nappier has faced the Stars on three occasions surrendering 11 goals.
An assist on the Stars lone goal last night helped Gustaf Westlund continue his two-point per-game pace against Omaha. Through the first four meetings the forward has eight points (1g, 7a). Sam Sternschein leads all skaters in the series with five goals. Josef Korenar saw his first action against Omaha on Friday night stopping 20 of 22 shots. Cayden Primeau has faced Omaha twice allowing 2.50 goals per game.
Better than Last Year:
Austin Alger's goal in the second period gave the forward more points for the 2016-17 campaign than he had all of last season. In 57 games last year the Miami University commit notched 23 points (11g, 12a) during his first season in the USHL. Alger's goal against the Stars was his 12th of the season in addition to 12 assists. In addition to points Alger has a minus-three rating this season compared to a minus-twelve a year ago.
The goal put Alger two points behind Pierce Crawford for the team lead, and tied him with Crawford for the team lead in goals.
