Madison Capitols News Release
DES MOINES, IA - The Madison Capitols fell to the Des Moines Buccaneers, 6-1, at Buccaneer Arena on Saturday night.
Madison (15-21-1-1) is ranked eighth in the Eastern Conference with 32 points. Des Moines (22-13-1-3) is in fifth place the Western Conference with 46 points.
The Buccaneers doubled their lead to 2-0 with defenseman Scooter Brickey's fourth goal of the season at 10:46 of the middle frame. Left wing David Keefer initially shot the puck from the left face-off circle and then picked up his own rebound. Keefer fed a pass from behind the net to defenseman Mario Ferraro in the left circle. Ferraro sent the puck over to Brickey in the right circle who settled the pass before wristing a shot through traffic and into the back of the net for the eventual game-winning goal.
At 19:30 of the first period, left wing Christopher Berger put the Buccaneers on the board with his sixth goal of the season. Forward Matt Jones blocked a clearing attempt by a Capitols player from behind the net, and carried it into the right face-off circle. Jones blasted a shot on net that Berger tipped over Madison goaltender Daniel Lebedeff's glove for a 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission.
Ferraro picked up a goal of his own at 15:44 of the second stanza. Right wing Julian Napravnik carried the puck down the right wing and put the brakes on in the right circle. Napravnik sent a short pass to Ferraro who was streaking through the zone. A Capitols player was pressuring Ferraro, but the defenseman spun around from right to left and jammed the puck past Lebedeff for his fifth goal of the season and a 3-0 advantage.
With just eight seconds remaining in the second period, center Matt Hudie tipped the puck past Lebedeff to give the Buccaneers a 4-0 lead. Left wing Tommy Parrottino pushed the puck back to defensmean Adam Parsells at the left point. Parsells' slap shot traveled through traffic and was tipped at the last minute by Hudie for his fourth goal of the season.
Just 12-seconds into the third period, right wing Vincent de Mey netted his fifth goal of the season. The Capitols won the opening face-off of the period. Left wing Mick Messner picked up a bouncing puck that deflected off a Buccaneers defenseman, and started streaking into the offensive zone. Messner fired a shot from the left circle that deflected wide to the left. The puck bounced behind the net and back out onto the right doorstep for de Mey to jam past netminder Nick MacNab to bring the score to 4-1.
Napravnik tallied back-to-back goals, just 21-seconds apart. The right wing scored his 10 goal of the season at 17:17 of the final period. Berger fed a pass from the right wall outside the face-off circle, through the slot and to Napravnik at the left doorstep for a one-timer and the goal. Jones picked up his second assist of the night on the goal that gave the Buccaneers a 5-1 advantage.
Napravnik picked up his 11th goal of the season at 17:38 of the final stanza. Parrottino skated down the right wing of the Capitols zone and passed the puck from the right circle, through the slot, for a one-time by Napravnik that went up and over Lebedeff.
Lebedeff (2-11-1-0) took his 11th loss of the season stopping 42-of-48 shots. MacNab (8-4-0-2) earned his eighth win of the season with 24 saves on 25 shots.
Madison went 0-for-1 on the power play. Des Moines was 0-for-2 with the man advantage.
Notables: Defenseman Cole Hults played in his 100th career USHL game...Goaltender Daniel Lebedeff made his first start in net for the Capitols since January 2, 2017...Lebedeff's 42 saves were a season high.
