MANCHESTER, NH - Left wing Shawn McEchern tallied a goal and an assist to lift the Providence Bruins over the Manchester Monarchs, 3-1, in front of Manchester's eighth capacity crowd of the season, 9,916 fans on Saturday night.
Manchester (39-26-2-4, 84 points) is in third place in the Atlantic Division. Providence (36-27-1-4, 77 points) is in fourth place in the Atlantic Division.
The Bruins put one in the net during a power play at 5:54 of the opening stanza by defenseman Ryan Gaucher. McEachern fed the puck to Gaucher who sent a bomb quivering over goaltender Adam Hauser's glove. Former Monarchs center Eric Healey assisted on Gaucher's third of the season.
McEachern found the back of the net at 7:48 of the middle frame to give the Bruins at 2-0 lead. Center Tyler Redenbach sent the puck to the open ice between the hash marks in the Monarchs zone where McEachern sent a one-timer booming through the air and clipping the back of the net. Healey earned his second assist of the night on the goal.
Monarchs left wing Noah Clarke cut the Bruins lead in half by scoring his 12th goal of the season at 19:16 of the second period. Providence's center Pascal Pelletier sat in the penalty box for charging when the Monarchs skated the puck into the Bruins zone. Defenseman Mark Ardelan fed the puck up to right wing Lauri Tukonen along the right boards. Tukonen chipped the puck into the right face-off circle where Clarke picked it up and rifled the puck past goaltender Derek Gustafson.
Right wing Jason MacDonald collected the insurance empty net goal at 19:26 of the final period. Left wing Jeremy Reich and center Ben Guite assisted on the goal.
Hauser (20-14-2) took the loss with 33 saves on the night. Gustafson (1-0-1) earned his first win of the season with 31 saves.
Manchester went 1-for-6 on the power play. Providence was 1-for-5 with the man advantage.
The Atlantic Division leading Portland Pirates come to Manchester on Wednesday, March 29 to face the Monarchs at 7:05 p.m.
