Iowa Chops News Release
DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Stars returned home from a six-game, 13-day road trip and hosted the Houston Aeros on Saturday night at Wells Fargo Arena. Iowa used three second period goals to post a 4-3 win over the Aeros.
With the Houston Aeros on a five-minute score-at-will power-play, the Aeros were able to rattle-off two power-play tallies by Clayton Stoner and Roman Voloshenko to take a 2-0 lead into the first intermission. Houston's Kirby Law had assists on both goals.
Going into the second period down 2-0, the Stars then rattled-off the game's next three goals. Toby Petersen scored the Stars lone power-play goal at 2:50 of the second period. The goal extended his points-streak to five games. He now has two goals and six assists in that span. Loui Eriksson then took a behind-the-back pass from defenseman Mario Scalzo and stuffed-home his 22nd of the season to tie the game at two. Veteran forward David Oliver put the Stars ahead 3-2 with top-shelf goal at 18:41 of the second period. Kyle Brodziak earned his second assist of the game on the goal.
Kirby Law evened the score at three midway through the third period. With three total points tonight, Law leads the AHL with 99 overall points, including 61 assists. The Stars answered just under two-minutes later when Brian Fahey fired a high wrist-shot on Houston goalie Seamus Kotyk. Kotyk reach above his head and misjudged the shot, redirecting it into his own net. Fahey's goal proved to be the game-winner.
Defenseman Mario Scalzo and forward Jamie Johnson finished with two assists.
Stars goaltender Mike Smith made 36 saves in the winning effort, including blanking Houston on 17 shots in the second period.
Attendance was 6,497. Power-play chances: IOWA: 1 for 5; HOUSTON: 2 for 6
