Abbotsford Heat News Release
Omaha, NE - One game after notching a shootout win, the Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights lost 3-2 in a shootout to the Peoria Rivermen on Saturday night at the Civic Auditorium. As with Thursday's win over Houston, the Knights twice came back a one-goal deficit to force overtime and then the shootout, but they couldn't notch the deciding goal.
Mike Zigomanis scored a powerplay goal just 2:34 into the game, whipping a wrister through traffic for his ninth goal of the season.
The Knights tied the game on their own powerplay later in the period. Richie Regehr took a shot from the right point, and Eric Nystrom tipped it past goalie Chris Beckford-Tseu for his 15th goal of the year.
Peoria forged ahead in the final minute of the period. Jon DiSalvatore slipped behind the Knights' defense for a breakaway, beating Brent Krahn with a hard wrist shot to give the Rivermen the 2-1 lead after one.
The Knights tied the game late in the second period. Zenith Komarniski's wrist shot from the left point beat a screened Beckford-Tseu at 17:22.
The Knights outshot Peoria 15-9 through the third period and overtime. They even had the best scoring chances during overtime with several shorthanded bids during a Peoria powerplay.
In the shootout, each team scored on its first two shots before the goalies turned the tables. Krahn and Gregg Naumenko, substituting for Beckford-Tseu, stopped the next five shooters. Finally in round eight, rookie David Bakes, playing in his second professional game, beat Krahn with a hard snap shot over his glove hand. Mark Giordano was then turned aside in his attempt to tie it. Krahn finished with 27 saves but took the shootout loss.
The Knights are now 33-26-2-9. They lost ground to the Iowa Stars who beat Houston tonight 4-3 to move to within seven of the Knights for the last playoff spot in the West Division. The Stars have two games in hand. The Knights return to action on Friday, March 31st when they host Houston at 7:00 p.m.
Tickets for all home games are on sale at the Civic Auditorium box office, Monday through Friday, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., on Sunday from noon through game time and at all Ticketmaster outlets. Tickets may be purchased by calling 422-1212 or at Ticketmaster.com.
