Marlies edge Barons in back and forth game

TORONTO, ON - Brad Leeb and Corey Murphy each scored twice and Murphy added an assist to lead the Marlies to a 6-5 win over the Cleveland Barons on Saturday night. Josh Hennessy scored his 22nd of the year in the loss, tying the Barons rookie goal scoring mark.

The Barons scored the first goal of the game for the third time in their past four games as Tomas Plihal netted his 6th of the year at the 9:40 mark of the first period. Plihal's goal was assisted by Ryane Clowe and Josh Hennessy. Plihal extended the Barons lead to two when he banged home a rebound in front of the net at the 19:18 mark of the period. Plihal's goals both came on the power play as the Barons went two-for-two with the man advantage. Toronto trimmed the lead to one just 26-seconds later as Jeff Corey scored his 2nd goal of the year.

Toronto took over in the second period to skate to a 4-3 lead after forty minutes of play. Toronto tied the game at two as John Pohl sent him his 18th power play goal of the season. Pohl's goal, assisted by Bates Battaglia and John Mitchell, came at the 3:50 mark of the second period. Brad Leeb scored a shorthanded goal at the 11:42 mark to give the Marlies their first lead of the night. Colin Murphy took advantage of a breakaway to score his 13th goal of the year. The Barons trimmed the lead to one as Shane Joseph scored a last-minute goal. The goal, his 10th of the year, was assisted by Ryane Clowe. The Barons were out-shot 16-6 in the period.

Toronto regained the two-goal lead on the power play as Leeb scored his second of the game. Hennessy answered back for the Barons just 36-seconds later. With the goal, Hennessy tied the Barons franchise record for rookie goal scoring with 22 goals this season. Lukas Kaspar scored his 14th of the season assisted by Shane Joseph to tie the game at the 9:21 mark. Colin Murphy regained the lead for the Marlies with his second of the night on assists from Kris Newbury and Brett Engelhardt. That would complete scoring for the game to secure a 6-5 win for the Marlies.

The Barons will kick-start the month of April with a five game homestand to finish out the regular season, including back-to-back games against the Iowa Stars on the 1st and 2nd.
