Bruins drop season finale

The Providence Bruins concluded the 2004-05 regular season schedule on Sunday afternoon at the Dunkin' Donuts Center Providence, with the Portland Pirates taking a 3-1 decision. The Bruins finished the season in fourth place in the Atlantic Division with their 40-30-3-7 (90 points) record.

The Bruins, who have qualified for the Calder Cup Playoffs for the 11th time in their 13-year history, will face the Manchester Monarchs in the best-of-seven Atlantic Division Semifinals. The series gets underway with Games 1 and 2 in Manchester on Friday, April 22 and Saturday, April 23, respectively. Both games will be played at 7:35 p.m. Game coverage can be heard live on WDDZ AM-550 and online at www.providencebruins.com.

The Bruins will host Games 3 and 4 on Monday, April 25 and Wednesday, April 27. The puck drops for both games at 7:05 p.m. Season ticketholders will use their tickets marked "Home Game #1" on April 25 and "Home Game #2" for the game on April 27.

Game 5, if necessary, would be played in Manchester on Thursday, April 28 at 7:05 p.m. The Bruins would host Game 6, if necessary, on Saturday, April 30 at 7:05 p.m. Should a deciding Game 7 be necessary, it would be played in Manchester on Monday, May 2 at 7:05 p.m.

Round 1 of the Calder Cup Playoffs is sponsored by Dunkin' Donuts, The Martone Group and National City Mortgage. The first 2,000 fans at both Games 3 and 4 will receive noisemaker clappers courtesy of Dunkin' Donuts, The Martone Group and National City Mortgage.

Bruin left wing Tomas Kurka scored his team's lone goal on Sunday, his eighth of the year. Goaltender Hannu Toivonen took the loss, giving up two goals on 14 shots in one period of play. Toivonen finished the season with a record of 29-18-3. His win total stands as the second-highest in a season in franchise history, behind only John Grahame's 37 in 1998-99. Chris Madden stopped 12 of the 13 shots he faced in 40 minutes of action.

Providence goaltender Chris Madden stopped 22 of the 26 shots he faced. Worcester also added an empty net goal late in the third period. Madden is 5-4-0 on the season.
