Broncos Offence Continues to Roll in Win over ICE

March 27, 2021 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Swift Current Broncos News Release

Regina, Sask. - The Swift Current Broncos (2-5-1-0) are scoring goals in bunches over their last three games, and tallied seven times in a 7-4 win over the Winnipeg ICE (5-3-0-0) Friday night.

The Broncos opened the scoring just 2:48 into the game. Jordan Borysiuk's shot off the rush was stopped by Carl Stankowski, but the rebound went up the slot for Bode Hagan to backhand in for his first WHL goal.

After a pair of penalty kills the Broncos extended their lead. Braeden Lewis's pass from the left wing in the ICE zone went off a defender and in for his first in the WHL to make it 2-0.

Lewis then picked up his first WHL assist after the ICE turned the puck over in their own zone. Lewis threw the puck across the zone for Caleb Wyrostok charging to the net, who pulled the puck to his backhand in tight and slid it across the line to push the Broncos lead to 3-0.

Owen Pickering saved a goal for the Broncos in the final seconds of the opening frame, kicking a puck off the goal line while the ICE were on the power play.

Winnipeg cut into the Broncos lead in the opening minute of the second when Peyton Krebs's shot sailed through a screen and past Isaac Poulter's blocker just 39 seconds into the period.

Swift Current quickly regained their three-goal lead as Aiden Bulych found the loose puck at the side of the net after a chance in front for Mathew Ward to push the Broncos ahead 4-1.

The Broncos ran into penalty trouble late in the second and Jakin Smallwood brought Winnipeg to within two heading into the final frame.

The ICE then made it a one-goal game after Owen Pederson fired in a rebound off a missed shot 2:35 into the third period.

The goal didn't deter the Broncos, who simply went the other way and restored their two-goal lead with Michael Farren finding a rebound off a shot from the blue line by Kaleb Bulych. It was Farren's fifth of the season.

Swift Current was re-energized by the goal and continued to press. Off the rush, Ward sent a perfect pass across the ice for Aiden Bulych to score his second of the game 9:55 into the third.

Josh Davies rounded out the goal scoring for Swift Current, connecting on the power play with a heavy wrist shot from the right circle to make it 7-3. Conor Geekie got one back to make the final score 7-4.

The Broncos now look ahead to the Brandon Wheat Kings for their next game, Monday at 4:00.
