Broncos Meet Wheat Kings Looking for Third Win in Four Games
March 27, 2021 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Swift Current Broncos News Release
Regina, Sask. - The Swift Current Broncos (2-5-1-0) have scored five or more goals in each of their past three games, a feat they hadn't accomplished since February 9, 11 and 14 during the 2017-18 season. They look to continue that trend into their next game as they face the Brandon Wheat Kings (5-2-1-0) Sunday afternoon.
Friday the Broncos jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first period against Winnipeg thanks to goals from Bode Hagan, Braeden Lewis and Caleb Wyrostok. The goals for Hagan and Lewis were the first of their WHL careers.
Aiden Bulych added a goal in the second as the Broncos took a 4-2 lead into the final frame before the ICE cut it down to a one-goal game early in the third. Swift Current didn't let up, adding three more goals off the sticks of Michael Farren, Bulych and Josh Davies to take the game 7-4. The recent offensive surge has vaulted the Broncos up to fourth in the East Division in goals with 27.
Mathew Ward recorded four assists in the win and now sits first in team scoring with nine assists in eight games. Michael Farren had three-point performance and is just behind Ward with five goals and three assists. Isaac Poulter turned aside 33 shots for his first win of the season.
The Wheat Kings are also coming off a victory against Winnipeg in their last game. Ridly Greig scored a shorthanded goal early in the third period that stood up as the game winner in a 4-3 final score. Brandon now sits second in the East Division, four points behind the Saskatoon Blades.
Sunday is the second meeting of the season between the Broncos and Wheat Kings with Brandon picking up a 4-1 win March 18. In that game, Brandon scored twice in 14 seconds in the opening frame before Farren's power-play goal made it 2-1 after the first. The game stayed 2-1 until halfway through the third period when Reid Perepeluk scored a shorthanded goal. Brandon added an empty netter in the final minute.
