March 27, 2021 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Winnipeg Ice News Release
The ICE were back in action for the second of back-to-back games, after a tough loss against the Brandon Wheat Kings on Thursday night. Winnipeg took on the Swift Current Broncos who managed 3 out of 4 points against Prince Albert and Saskatoon in the past two games.
It was the Broncos that would strike first at 2:48 as Bode Hagan snapped it past Carl Stankowski after the ICE goalie made the initial save off of Jordan Borysiuk. Swift Current would double their lead after an unfortunate bounce on a 3-on-1 deflected off an ICE player and into the net. Braeden Lewis would get credit for the goal. Shortly after, Caleb Wyrostok received a slick saucer pass from Lewis and then went forehand to backhand past Stankowski to put the Broncos up 3-0 after the first frame. ICE led in the shot category 15-12 after the period.
Winnipeg would cut the deficit to two just 39 seconds into the period as Peyton Krebs' fired a shot from the point on the power-play through a screened Isaac Poulter. Mike Ladyman and Connor McClennon drew the assist on the Krebs goal as the ICE captain recorded his 200th career WHL point. Swift Current would regain their 3 goal lead as Broncos forward Michael Farren found Aiden Bulych who ripped a shot past Stankowski for the 4-1 lead. After McClennon dropped the gloves with Devin Aubin, the ICE responded immediately as Jakin Smallwood poked home a loose puck to make it 4-2 heading into the second intermission.
The ICE continued the momentum into the third period as Owen Pederson got the ICE to within one goal as he fired one past Poulter just 2:35 into the period. Nolan Orzeck and Peyton Krebs would collect the assists on the goal. The Broncos would respond as the back-and-forth game continued, with Farren picking up the goal for the Broncos less than two minutes after Pederson brought the ICE within one. Swift Current would put up two more goals as Aiden Bulych and Josh Davies each picked up one, before Winnipeg's Conor Geekie scored one for the ICE, making the final 7-4 for Swift Current. Shots were 38-37 in favour of the Broncos.
ICE are back for a Sunday matchup with the Moose Jaw Warriors. Puck drop is at 9:00 pm CT.
