Medicine Hat Tigers News Release

Medicine Hat, AB - It was the renewing of a very familiar rivalry as the Lethbridge Hurricanes made the trip east up the Crowsnest Highway to take on the Medicine Hat Tigers for the first time this season.

The Tigers were looking to get off to a quick start against the Hurricanes, but Oasiz Wiesblatt got his stick up on a Lethbridge attacking player putting the Tigers down a man only 3 minutes into the opening frame. Special Teams proved to be a difference maker again as Brett Kemp and Corson Hopwo broke out on a two on one, with Kemp setting up Hopwo beautifully to give the Tigers the early lead on the shorthanded marker.

Carl Tetachuk would stall tall for the Hurricanes weathering 16 of the 17 shots that came his direction in the first period, while his counterpart Garin Bjorklund stopped all six shots he faced, but don't let the numbers fool you Bjorklund had to be sharp to keep the Tigers lead.

The Tigers jumped out of the gate in the second period and applied a very heavy forecheck and consistent pressure to keep the Hurricanes on their heels. Tetachuk continued to stymy the Tabbies keeping the Hurricanes within striking distance. Bjorklund did his part at the other end of the ice, stopping the seven shots directed on him to take a 1-0 lead into the final frame.

Lukas Svejkovsky drew back into the lineup tonight after coming off an upper body injury and the dynamic sniper was up to his old tricks again as the Point Roberts, Washington product sniped a laser past Tetachuk to put the Orange and Black up by a pair.

Medicine Hat's 2020 1st round bantam pick Reid Andresen appeared in his first career WHL game tonight and the 15 year old would not have to wait long to hear his name called on the scoresheet as he activated off the back end down the left side, eventually setting up Svejkovsky's second of the night as he was Johnny on the spot to put home the loose biscuit, 3-0 Tigers with a little over 8 minutes to go in the third.

The Tigers netminder was called on to make some key saves to maintain the lead. Bjorklund went on to earn his second career shutout, stopping all 22 shots fired his direction.

The Tigers next action comes tomorrow evening as they get on the bus and head to the Enmax Centre in Lethbridge for game two of this three game weekend series. Puck Drop is 7pm.
