Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Jonah Bride crushed two home runs as the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp bested the Charlotte Knights 7-5 Friday night in front of 5,680 fans at 121 Financial Ballpark.
Trailing 4-1 in the bottom of the fourth, Jacksonville's (8-5) offense woke up in a big way. Bride (2) started the inning with his first home run of the season off Charlotte (3-10) righty Jake Woodford (L, 0-1). Tristan Gray walked and two batters later, Victor Mesa Jr. (1) walloped his first Triple-A home run, tying the game at four.
Jacksonville continued their onslaught in the fifth, taking their first and only lead of the game. Jonathan Davis led off the inning with a double and scored on a base hit from Otto López. After a double play, Bride blasted his second big fly of the game to increase the Jumbo Shrimp lead to 6-4.
Jacksonville's final tally came in the bottom of the sixth. Dane Myers led off with a base hit and went to third on a double from Mesa Jr. With runners on second and third, a passed ball allowed Myers to score the seventh run for the Jumbo Shrimp, giving them a three-run advantage.
The Knights offense was rolling early but sputtered late in the contest. Colson Montgomery (1) hit his first Triple-A home run with two outs as Charlotte trailed 7-5.
Charlotte's bats exploded early in the third off Jacksonville hurler Braxton Garrett (W, 1-0). Mark Payton led off with a single, and after a fielder's choice, Rafael Ortega singled. Danny Mendick (3) blasted a three-run home run, giving the Knights the early lead. Two batters later, Chuckie Robinson (2) rocked a solo home run to push the lead to 4-0.
The Jumbo Shrimp responded in the bottom of the third. José Devers (2) led off the inning with a solo home run to cut the deficit to 4-1.
