Boulders Take Down Equipe Quebec in HR Derby
September 9, 2021 - Frontier League (FL)
New York Boulders News Release
The New York Boulders survived the home run derby against Equipe Quebec after watching a five-run lead disappear at Stade Quillorama in Trois-Rivieres in the Province of Quebec on Wednesday night.
The game was tied at 9-9 after 10 innings of play.
The loss dropped Equipe Quebec into a tie atop the Frontier League's Atlantic Division with the Tri-City Valley Cats, who were rained out at home earlier in the evening in their game with the Sussex County Miners. Each team sits at 48-43.
The Boulders had moved out to a five-run sixth inning lead at 8-3 before Equipe Quebec chipped away, tying the game with a three-run ninth inning rally that was capped off by a two-out double by Jeffy Parra, his third and fourth RBI of the night.
The ninth inning rally started with a one-out double by Dustyn Macaluso off of Zach Schneider. One out later, Raphael Gladu singled in Macaluso to make it 9-7. David Glaude then singled to put runners on the corners and bring Tanner Kiest on to relieve Schneider.
Glaude then swiped second before Parra took a 3-2 pitch to the gap in right-center to knot the game at 9-9.
Kiest then struck out Connor Panas to send the game into extra innings.
Kiest and Evan Rutckyj would match scoreless 10th innings to send the game to a home run derby.
New York had snapped a 3-3 tie with five runs in the sixth inning. The frame began with Marcus Mastrobuoni hitting a solo home run, his eighth of the year. Later in the stanza, a Frank Moscatiello wild pitch allowed Phil Capra to score and the Boulders added an RBI single by Kevonte Mitchell and a two-run double from Zach Kirtley to take an 8-3 lead.
Equipe Quebec, however, would chip away at their five-run deficit. In the bottom of the sixth, they would pick up a pair of runs in a single by Parra; then, in the seventh, an RBI single from Ruben Castro would pull them within 8-6.
New York, however, would tack on what appeared to be an insurance run in the ninth inning against reliever Andrew Case. Ray Hernandez singled with one out, stole second and scored on a single by Mastrobuoni to increase their advantage to 9-6.
The Boulders had taken a 3-0 lead after 2ý innings on a two-run home run by Hernandez, his league leading 21st of the season, in the second and an RBI groundout by Hernandez in the next frame.
Equipe Quebec, though, struck for three runs in their half of the fifth inning to tie the game at 3-3 and chase New York starter Dan Wirchansky. Quebec got RBI singles from David Glaude and Gift Ngoepe and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Panas to forge the tie.
Wirchansky was removed in favor of Jamed Mulry with one out in the fifth after allowing six hits, walking five and striking out six. He was charged with three runs, all earned.
Mulry was relieved to start the eighth inning by Zach Schneider. Mulry allowed three runs on five hits over 2 2/3 innings of work while striking out three and walking a pair.
Henry Omana started for Equipe Quebec and went five innings, surrendering three runs on five hits while walking six and striking out eight. He was followed to the hill by Nick Horvath, Moscatiello, Stephen Knapp, Case and Rutckyj as manager Pat Scalabrini ran six hurlers out to the mound.
