Hartford Yard Goats News Release

Hartford, CT- Yard Goats second basemen Bret Boswell smashed two home runs and fellow Hartford teammate Drew Romo had two hits and scored two runs for Hartford, but despite their notable efforts, the Yard Goat dropped the first game of their series against the Binghamton Rumble Ponies by a final score of 13-7 on Tuesday night at Dunkin' Park. After a solid performance that saw him receive a no-decision in his first start of the season, Hartford starting pitcher Nick Garcia looked to grab his first win. Despite showcasing a tantalizing changeup, the Rumble Ponies were able to spray the ball to all fields, as Garcia threw just two innings while giving up five earned runs on four hits and three walks.

The scoring started early for Binghamton, as just four batters into the game, Rumble Ponies' center fielder Brandon McIlwain drove home Binghamton left fielder Matt Rudick on an RBI single. After escaping the first inning with only one run allowed, Garcia would go on to surrender four more runs in the second.

Binghamton's approach was methodical, as they continued to work counts and keep the line moving. Rumble Ponies designated hitter Tanner Murphy drew a walk to lead off the second frame and was immediately rewarded, as the next batter, Binghamton catcher Hayden Senger lined an RBI double to center field to extend their lead to 2-0. After a walk and a sacrifice bunt, Binghamton second baseman Wyatt Young would drive home two with an RBI single. Two batters later, he too would score on an RBI single by Rumble Ponies first baseman JT Schwartz to make it 5-0.

Hartford would respond in the bottom half of the inning. After loading the bases, Binghamton starting pitcher Jose Chacin balked, allowing Romo to score the Yard Goats' first run. However, Chacin would escape further trouble by getting Hartford designated hitter Colin Simpson to popout to left field.

In the third inning, Yard Goats right-handed pitcher Adam McKillican would relieve Garcia, and after retiring two of the first three batters he faced, he would allow three Rumble Ponies to score in the inning, as Young would come through again for Binghamton with a two-RBI single. Two batters later, Schwartz followed Young's lead, as he drove home Young with an RBI single of his own, making it 8-1 Rumble Ponies

Once again, Hartford showed some fight. Yard Goats shortstop Julio Carreras led off the inning with a double, followed by a single from Romo to put runners on the corner. The next batter, Yard Goats' third baseman Warming Bernabel, ripped a double down the left field line to score Carreras, and then Boswell hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Romo and cut the Rumble Ponies' lead to five runs.

Binghamton was not done, however, as they would score five runs off of Yard Goats' reliever Jared Biddy in the sixth inning thanks to a pair of walks, a pair of singles, and a pair of doubles from the Rumble Ponies' relentless offense.

In the bottom half of the inning, Boswell added to his RBI total by ripping his first home run, a solo shot, of the season to deep left center field, making the score 13-4 Rumble Ponies. Two innings later, in the bottom of the eighth inning, Boswell proved he was not finished, as he smoked a long 2-run home run to deep right field to make the score 13-7 Binghamton. However, that is as far as the Yard Goats' comeback would go, as Carreras grounded out to third base to end the game.

The Yard Goats and Rumble Ponies play the second game of a six-game series on Wednesday night (7:10 PM) at Dunkin' Park, and tickets are available. The game will be broadcast on AM 1410, FM 100.9 and on the iheart radio app.
