Boston Bruins assign two players to Providence

Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins, member of the American Hockey League, announced that the Boston Bruins have assigned goaltender Tim Thomas and center Ben Walter to Providence's training camp. Walter returns to Providence after being recalled by Boston on Friday, September 23rd.

The Providence Bruins have also released goaltender Mike Ayers, defensemen Robbie Barker, Cole Byers, Bobby Gates and Evan Shaw and forwards Brian McConnell and Cody McLeod.

Thomas, 27, enters his ninth professional season. This will be Thomas' third season with the Providence Bruins. Last year, the Flint, MI native played 56 games with Jokerit Helsinki in Finland. During the 2003-04 season, Thomas spent 43 games in net for Providence going 20-16-6 with a 1.84 GAA and a 94.1 save percentage. In 2002-03, Thomas played 35 games with Providence, while starting four games for Boston. In Providence, Thomas was 18-12-5 with a 2.87 GAA and a 90.6 save percentage. With Boston, he was 3-1 with a 3.00 GAA. Thomas is 1st on the Providence Bruins All-Time Shutout list with 10, 5th all-time in wins with 38 and 5th all-time in saves with 2,193.

Walter, 21, was the Bruins' fifth pick, 160th overall, in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. The Vancouver, British Columbia native spent the past three seasons at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell where he recorded 90 points (49g, 41a) and 58 PIM in 107 games. Last season he led Hockey East in goals (26), including three hat tricks and tied for ninth in points (39).

The 2005-06 season opens up at home at the Dunkin' Donuts Center on Friday, October 14th at 7:05 p.m. against the Portland Pirates. Training camp continues October 4th at 10:30 a.m. at the Dunkin' Donuts Center - Providence.
