Boomers Edge Grizzlies in Series Opener

SAUGET, Ill. - The Schaumburg Boomers tacked on two runs of insurance in the ninth inning and held on for a 6-4 win Friday night against the Gateway Grizzlies at GCS Ballpark.

In front of a crowd of 4,463, Gateway (45-34) suffered their fourth straight loss, which moved them three games back of River City and two games back of Schaumburg in the West Division.

Gateway starting pitcher Ja'Vaun West (7-2) took the loss after allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits in six innings. West picked up eight strikeouts and walked five.

Schaumburg (47-32) scored two runs on a Justin Vasquez third inning home run to take a 2-0 lead.

Ben Waldrip hit the first of three Gateway solo home runs in the fourth inning to cut the Boomers lead to one.

The Boomers picked up an unearned run in the fifth inning and another run in the sixth inning on a Tony Delmonico RBI double to extend their lead to 4-1.

Josh Adams hit two solo home runs, one in the sixth inning and one in the eighth, to bring the score to 4-3 after eight innings, but Mark Nelson hit a two-run home run in the ninth to add insurance runs for the Boomers.

Adams finished the game 3-for-4.

Michael Johnson scored a run for Gateway in the ninth inning on a wild pitch.

The Grizzlies continue their three-game series with the Boomers Saturday night at GCS Ballpark. Right-hander Tucker Jensen (7-3) will start for the Grizzlies. First pitch is set for 7:05.
