Rascals Crush Greys, Win Series

August 15, 2014 - Frontier League (FL)
River City Rascals News Release

The Rascals rode a strong start by Joe Cuda and hot bats to a big series-clinching victory over the Frontier Greys Thursday night. The River City boys posted twelve runs on their visitors in support of Cuda, who carried a shutout into the seventh and picked up the first Frontier League victory of his career.

Cuda could not have been any better through three innings, setting down the first nine men that he faced. Of those, three went away with Ks. Cuda, formerly of the St. Louis Cardinal organization, would finish with seven strikeouts.

His offense gave him plenty of support. Eric Williams doubled to start the Rascal hitting in the bottom of the first. Saxon Butler would eventually drive Williams in with a sacrifice fly to right for his league-leading 65th RBI of the season. He would add another in the eighth to increase his runs-driven-in haul to 66.

The Rascals would score three more times in the third off Greys starter Brandon Rohde. Joe Staley and Hector Crespo picked up RBI in the inning, with Staley walking in Steve Carrillo with the bases loaded and Crespo knocking in Johnny Morales and Saxon Butler with a single. The action in the inning was interrupted for roughly ten minutes when Greys manager Kyle Haines began an argument with umpire Tim Winningham over balls and strikes to Staley. Haines was tossed from the game, but he did not go quietly, physically bumping field umpire D.W. Brown and arguing vehemently with the boys in blue for several minutes.

The Rascals would add three more in the fifth, all off the bat of Brian McConkey. The big first baseman took Rohde over the right field wall in that inning for a three-run homerun that brought Morales and Butler around to score once again. The shot was McConkey's eighth in just over twenty games with River City.

Cuda meanwhile continued to mow down the Greys. He carried his goose egg into the seventh before surrendering a two-run homerun to Michael Vaughn. Vaughn's third dinger of the series was the lone hiccup in Cuda's night though. He would finish with a superb final line of 6.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 7 K.

The offense once again exploded in the eighth for the Rascals. Hector Crespo got things going by launching a leadoff solo homerun to left center. The blast was Crespo's third of the series and fourth of the season. He finished the three-game set with the Greys with eleven total RBI to bring his total to thirty-four for 2014. Staley would pick up two RBI himself in the inning to bring his total his total to three on the night and four in the series. His base hit to right brought in both Morales and Butler once again. Each of them would finish the night with three runs scored.

When it was all said and done, River City had prevailed 12-2. Cuda got the win, while Rohde got the loss. The win was the forty-seventh on the year for the Rascals, who won their third series out of their last four. They remain at T.R. Hughes to open a three-game set with the Southern Illinois Miners. First pitch in Game #1 will be thrown at 7:05 on Friday night.
