Miners Drop Rain-Shortened Game In River City

Southern Illinois Miners News Release

Marion, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Miners lost 1-0 on a solo homer by Hector Crespo in the sixth inning, with torrential rains beginning almost immediately thereafter in a six-inning loss at T.R. Hughes Ballpark in O'Fallon.

Starter Anthony Montefusco pitched well in his Miners debut, as the George Mason University product allowed no runs on eight hits in five innings, walking one and striking out four. He got out of several jams, none bigger than when the Rascals had the bases loaded and one out in the fourth. Montefusco induced a soft lineout to Ryan Cavan at short before striking out Saxon Butler swinging to end the threat.

Britt Robertshaw (3-2) came in for Montefusco in the sixth, and got the first two batters out, but left a 2-0 fastball up and out over the plate that Crespo hit out to left-center field for the only run of the ballgame. The rains then fell in sheets as the Miners were denied a chance to answer in the later innings.

There was also a short rain delay in the fifth inning, with the Miners having a big chance to score with runners at first and third with two outs, and a 3-1 count on Matt Howard. But the rain suspended play there as well, and after play resumed, Howard flew out to center field to end the inning.

The loss and Evansville's win over Washington dropped the Miners back into a three-way tie for first place in the East division, and Southern Illinois will attempt to bounce back from the unfortunate circumstances surrounding their Friday night defeat on Saturday night, weather permitting, at 7:05 p.m. Rick Teasley will throw for the Miners against River City's Tim Koons.
