Normal CornBelters News Release
ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, established a new franchise single-game run record and registered double-digit runs for the third straight night in a 20-7 victory over the Rockford Aviators on Friday night at Aviators Stadium.
The Belters struck first in the second inning, taking advantage of two walks and a hit batter to load the bases with nobody out, scoring a pair of runs on a double to the right field corner by Tyler Shover. A ground out by Santiago Chirino scored Jhiomar Veras from third base and a Sam Judah single plated Shover to give the Belters a 4-0 lead.
The CornBelters added to the lead in the fourth inning with five more runs on just one hit, as the Aviators committed three errors and threw two wild pitches. The Belters lone RBI in the frame came on a Judah ground out as the guests took a 9-0 lead. The fourth Aviators error of the night led to two more runs in the fifth inning combined with a Chirino RBI double for a 12-0 advantage.
The Aviators tallied three runs in their fifth inning with two hits followed by a sacrifice fly by Michael Hur, then a two-run line drive homer into the right field party deck by Edgar Corcino to cut the deficit to 12-3.
The Belters got a run back in the sixth when Ozney Guillen led off with a double, went to third on the Aviators' fifth error and scored on a double play to increase the advantage to 13-3.
Rockford returned the favor in the sixth by taking advantage of two Normal errors on potential double play grounders and scoring twice on a base hit by Brian Bistagne and a sacrifice fly by Mason Morioka to reduce the Belters lead to 13-5.
The CornBelters scored another handful in the seventh inning on back-to-back home runs by Mike Schwartz (over the center field batter's eye) and Judah (off the left field scoreboard), plus a sacrifice fly by Guillen and a two-run pinch-hit single by Jorge Chavarria to push to score to 18-5. A two-run homer by Guillen just over the wall and off the tip of the fielder's glove closed the Belters scoring. Two-out RBI hits by Tanner Witt and Kenny Bryant in the Aviators ninth were the final tallies.
Mike Schweiss (4-2) worked 5 2/3 innings for his third straight win. Ethan Elias pitched the final three innings for his first save. Rockford starter Nick Grim (0-3) took the loss.
The Belters continue the brief road trip at Rockford with a 7:05 p.m. Saturday first pitch as lefty Matt Packer (2-2, 2.72 ERA) starts on the mound for Normal while the Aviators counter with right-hander Ryan Zimmerman (7-4, 3.50). Details can be found at the team web site, www.normalbaseball.com . The games can be heard live at www.normalbaseball.com beginning 10 minutes before the scheduled first pitch.
