
Bombs Away: IronBirds Beat Lake Monsters, 6-4

Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Aberdeen, MD - Joe Velleggia powered the Aberdeen IronBirds to a 6-4 win over the Vermont Lake Monsters, Short Season Class A affiliate of the Oakland Athletics.
The IronBirds got on top early, scoring in the bottom of the second. Velleggia led off with a single, and advanced to second after Connor Narron drew a one out walk. Austin Knight reached on a Vermont fielding error, and then Dudley Leonora knocked a two RBI single to right field, giving the IronBirds a 2-0 lead.
Vermont cut into the Aberdeen lead in the top of the fourth. Chih Fang Pan led off with a bunt single and Xavier Macklin batted him home with a two out RBI double, making it 2-1 Aberdeen.
Then the IronBird bats got going in the bottom of the fifth. Dudley Leonora lined the first pitch of the inning into the left center field gap, allowing him to reach second with a leadoff double. Chris Clinton then stepped up to the plate and, after attempting to bunt Leonora to third, hit a high, arching home run to left field that landed in the Lake Monster bullpen, giving the IronBirds a 4-1 lead. Aberdeen was not done, however. Mychal Givens reached on a fielder's choice and then Velleggia added to his career night by hitting a ball that raced to the visiting clubhouse, giving Velleggia his third home run of the season and the IronBirds lead 6-1 after five innings of play.
Vermont struck back in the top of the sixth. Pan led off with a single and Chad Lewis hit a one out single before they were both were batted home by a Chris Affinito two RBI double, making it 6-3 Aberdeen.
Affinito would strike again in the top of the eighth. He hit a one out home run to center field, completing the scoring at 6-4.
Parker Bridwell (2-3, 4.39) went 5.2 innings, allowed six hits, three runs (all earned), walked one, and struck out six. Kurt Wunderlich (0-3, 9.69) took the loss. He allowed six hits, five runs (three earned), two walks, and struck out three.
Game two of this three game set will start at 7:05 p.m. Jake Cowan (0-3, 4.39) will get the start for the IronBirds, while the Lake Monsters will counter with Tyler Vail (0-0, HNP).
