Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release

NILES, OH - The Connecticut Tigers could not get much offense going to go along with a strong pitching performance from Brennan Smith and fell 2-1 to the Mahoning Valley Scrappers on Wednesday night at Eastwood Field.

With the game tied at two in the bottom of the ninth and Ryan Woolley on the hill for the Tigers, Evan Frazar started off the frame with a base hit and moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt by Cody Elliott. Frazar advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored the winning run on a walk-off base hit from KC Serna into right field.

The Scrappers spoiled a sterling pitching performance by Brennan Smith. The Tigers starter, coming off a complete game loss at Staten Island, tossed seven innings only giving up one run on eight hits and striking out five.

The Tigers struck first in the fourth inning on an RBI base hit by Patrick Leyland that scored Jeff Holm to put Connecticut up 1-0. The lead would not last long, as the Scrappers tied it at one in the fifth on an RBI single from Jake Lowery, scoring Serna from second base.

Both teams' bats would remain silent until the Scrappers scored the game-winner in the ninth.

Joseph Colon picked up his second win of the year, throwing five shutout frames out of the bullpen, while Woolley suffered his second loss of the season.

Jeanmar Gomez got the start for Mahoning Valley, down from Triple-A Columbus, who was off for the All-Star break. Gomez, who came down to start in order to stay in line for a possible call-up to the big league Cleveland Indians this week, threw four innings, surrendering one run on five hits, while walking none and striking out three.

The Tigers will try to even up the series with Mahoning Valley in game two tomorrow night. First pitch is set for 7:05 PM.
