Aberdeen IronBirds Game Notes

Aberdeen IronBirds News Release

The IronBirds look to win back-to-back games for the first time this season as they welcome the Vermont Lake Monsters to Ripken Stadium for a three-game series. Full Media Notes are attached.

Tonight's Match-up

The IronBirds will try to win back-to-back games for the first time this season tonight as they open up a three-game series with the Vermont Lake Monsters (Class-A Short Season affiliate of the Oakland A's). The two clubs will play six straight games against each other, with the final three taking place in Vermont. The IronBirds return home today after taking two of three from the Tri-City ValleyCats. Backed by strong pitching from 2011 draft picks Mike Wright and Matt Taylor, the IronBirds completed their first series-win by beating the ValleyCats Monday night 7-6. Tonight, the IronBirds will have right-hander Parker Bridwell on the hill. He's looking for his first win since opening night. He'll go up against right-hander Kyle Wunderlich.

Mazur Announces Retirement

IronBirds relief pitcher Steven Mazur was placed on the Voluntary Retired List by the Orioles on Wednesday. Mazur, who had shoulder surgery in the off-season, had struggled in his past two outings. Mazur spent parts of two seasons with the IronBirds. In 2010, he led the team in saves.

Hornback Promoted

The Orioles promoted IronBirds catcher and first baseman Riley Hornback to the Class-A Delmarva Shorebirds on Tuesday. Hornback spent time in Delmarva in May and June of this season. He batted .215 in 19 games with Aberdeen.

Somebody's got a case of the Mondays...

After defeating the ValleyCats 7-6, the IronBirds improved to 2-2 on Mondays. It's the only day of the week in which Aberdeen has a .500 or better record.

Dynamic Duo

Wright and Taylor combined to allow two runs on just three hits in seven innings of work Monday night at Tri-City. Wright, who started the game, surrendered back-to-back home runs in the second inning. He settled down and retired the next nine batters he faced. Taylor set down seven straight before exiting the ball game. The duo combined to strike seven batters out.
