Pair Of 2-Run Homers In 5th Lead Aberdeen To 6-4 Win Over Vermont

ABERDEEN, MD --- Chris Clinton and Joe Velleggia both hit two-run homers in the bottom of the fifth inning for a 6-1 Ironbirds lead and Aberdeen held on for a 6-4  victory over Vermont Lake Monstersin New York-Penn League action Wednesday night at Ripken Stadium.

The Ironbirds got a pair of unearned runs in the second inning on a Dudley Leonora two-run single following a two-out fielding error by Vermont third baseman Chad Lewis. The Lake Monsters got a run back in the fourth on a Chih-Fang Pan bunt single and a two-out RBI double from Xavier Macklin.

Leonora led off the fifth with a double and Clinton followed with a two-run homer to leftfield off Lake Monsters starter Kurt Wunderlich, who then gave up a double to Glynn Davis. Drew Bailey came in to relieve Wunderlich and two batters later gave up the second two-run homer of the inning to Velleggia, who went 4-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.

Vermont scored two run in the sixth on a two-run double from Chris Affinito, who also hit his first home run of the season in the eighth to cut the Aberdeen lead to 6-4. The Lake Monsters were able to bring the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but Jordan Tripp flied out just short of the warning track in leftfield to end the game.

Parker Bridwell (2-3) allowed three runs on six hits with one walk and six strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings to earn the victory for Aberdeen (6-20), which won for the third time in the last four games. Leonora was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI, while Jose Mota recorded the final out for his second save of the season.

Wunderlich (0-3) was charged with five runs (three earned) on six hits over four-plus innings for the loss. Reliever Jeff Urlaub tossed two scoreless innngs with three strikeouts, giving him one walk and 22 strikeouts in 15 1/3 innings. 

Vermont (14-9), which has now lost two straight games for just the second time this season, play again at Aberdeen on Thursday night at 7:05 pm with the Lake Monsters starting pitcher scheduled to be Tyler Vail, who just joined Vermont from the Burlington Bees of the Midwest League. The Lake Monsters return home on Saturday for a three-game homestand against Aberdeen.
