-SPIKES HEAD TO BIG APPLE TONIGHT: After the first off day of the season, the State College Spikes face the team with the New York-Penn League's best record, the Staten Island Yankees, in the first game of a three-game series tonight at Richmond County Bank Ballpark. Tonight also marks the first time in 2011 that the Spikes will face a team from outside the PInckney Division. Staten Island leads the all-time series, 11-4.
-LAST GAME: Justin Bencsko delivered a walk-off home run to end the game in the ninth inning as the Spikes came from five runs down in the seventh inning to defeat the Batavia Muckdogs, 7-6, on Monday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Bencsko sent a 3-2 pitch from Batavia reliever Ricky Martinez to the Outfield Bleachers in right field with one out in the ninth inning to give State College back-to-back wins for the second time in 2011. Kirk Singer also had two triples for the second night in a row to tie a Spikes single-game record, while Matt Skirving doubled twice and drove in three runs.
-COOPER MAKES SECOND PRO START: Right-hander Jordan Cooper gets the ball tonight for the State College to begin the game. Cooper, the Pirates' 22nd-round draft pick in 2011 out of the University of Kentucky, is making the second appearance of his professional career. In his debut this past Thursday, Cooper yielded a total of seven runs on seven hits in 2 1/3 innings and took the loss, but elicited a pair of double plays in the effort.
-YANKEES TAP MARTINEZ TO START SERIES: Staten Island right-hander Richard Martinez takes to the mound this evening for his fourth start and fifth appearance of the year. In his last outing, Martinez allowed three runs on four hits and five walks while striking out two batters over four innings in a no-decision. The native of Venezuela racked up an ERA of 11.29 in 11 appearances for Single-A Charleston earlier this season.
