Rain Does Cyclones No Favors

Brooklyn, NY -- The Brooklyn Cyclones (12-13) were defeated by the Auburn Doubledays (15-11) by a score of 9-3 in the first of a three game set. The 5,760 fans in attendance had to endure a 49 minute rain delay in the second inning to catch the end of Wednesday night's contest. Starter Marco Camarena (1-2) did not return to pitch after the delay and was saddled with the loss after tossing just 1.0 inning. The Cyclones needed five relievers to finish the rain soaked game. Chad Jenkins (1-0) picked up the win for the Doubledays.

Auburn jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first. With runners on the corners and no outs, Matt Skole hit a slow roller to third base, giving the runner on third enough time to score. After putting runners on the corners for the second time in the inning, the Doubledays plated their second run of the game on a single to center field.

With no outs and a Doubleday on first base during the top of the second, strong gusts of wind blew into the stadium, followed by a strong downpour. After the ensuing rain delay, Steve Winnick relieved Camarena. Owner of a 1.04 ERA before taking the hill, Winnick allowed three runs to score - a season-high for an appearance - before retiring the side.

The Doubledays tacked onto their 5-0 lead in the third inning. After loading the bases and walking a run in, Winnick was lifted in favor of Tyson Seng with one out in the inning. Seng promptly yielded a single to allow two inherited runners to score, but quickly recorded two strikeouts to prevent further damage. Down 8-0 in the bottom of the fourth, Danny Muno collected Brooklyn's first hit of the contest - a line drive single to left field. Muno extended his hitting streak to five games with the base hit. Brandon Brown followed up with a line drive single of his own to give the Cyclones runners on first and second with no outs. Brooklyn then took advantage of an Auburn miscue to score their first run. What appeared to be a 6-4-3 double play off the bat of Javier Rodriguez was botched by the shortstop, who fielded the groundball and threw it into left field. Muno scored on the play, Brown moved to third, and Rodriguez reached safely. Cole Frenzel then plated Brown on a fielder's choice to narrow the deficit to six runs. The RBI was Frenzel's first as a professional.

Seng worked perfect fourth and fifth innings, but did not return to pitch the sixth inning. The righthander retired eight consecutive batters before being lifted.

Brooklyn rallied for a run in the bottom of the sixth, but nearly scored two. After Charles Thurber singled with the bases loaded to narrow Auburn's lead to five runs, the Doubledays turned an inning-ending double play on what appeared to be a sacrifice fly. With runners on second and third, Xorge Carrillo flew out to center field, but before the runner from third could tag up, the center fielder fired to second to catch the runner straying off the base.

Casey Hauptman, who came on in relief for Seng, tossed perfect sixth and seventh innings before being lifted in favor of Orlando Tovar.

Leading 8-3, Auburn extended their lead to six runs in the top of the eighth. Tovar induced two quick fly outs to begin the inning, but a two-out double and a throwing error by Muno allowed the Doubledays to take a 9-3 lead.

The Cyclones were retired in order in both the eighth and ninth to put the team under .500 for the first time since July 29, 2008 when they were 20-21.

Brooklyn returns to action tomorrow, Thursday, July 13 at 7:00 p.m. LHP Carlos Vazquez (1-2) will take on RHP Wirkin Estevez (2-1). Tomorrow's game marks the second Jersday Thursday of 2011! The first 3,000 fans will receive the White Jersey presented by St. Francis College. Everyone will also be invited to run the bases at the conclusion of the game.
