Bombers Offense Shut Down in 9-1 Loss to Kalamazoo

KALAMAZOO, MI- The Bombers offense was silenced by the Growlers pitching staff Sunday in a 9-1 loss.

Kalamazoo used three different pitchers allowing just two hits against the Bombers. Nate Fleischli started for the Growlers throwing six no-hit innings striking out four while walking five. Taylor Perrett threw the seventh and the eighth and was followed by Garrett Willis who pitched the final frame.

It was Perrett who allowed Battle Creek's only hits hit of the game. Both hits were singles coming in the eighth by Ed Johnson and Aaron Beck.

Even though the Bombers were quiet with the bats they did score the first run of the game. Battle Creek loaded the bases in the first inning on three walks and then a balk by Fleischli on the mound scored Nick Powell.

The Growlers big inning was in the fifth off Bombers starter Tanner McNamara. David Coppedge, Nolan McCarthy, and Devin Burkes each had RBI singles in the inning and Dominic Pitelli drove in a run on a fielder's choice.

Pitelli lead the Growlers with two RBI going 1-5.

McNamara went as long as he possibly could on the mound for the Bombers. The righty went 5.2 innings letting up five runs on six hits and six walks striking out five.

He was aided in the field by his battery mate Drew Dyer who threw out three runners from behind the plate.

The Growlers tied the game in the first to quickly answer the only Bombers run of the game on a double steal allowing Brooks Coetzee to score from third. Kalamazoo took the lead for good in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Luke Storm, leading to eight unanswered runs scored by the Growlers. They would add three runs in the eighth off reliver Jack Merrifield as Brooks Coetzee hit an RBI double and a single by Pitelli scored two runs, one of them coming in on an error.

Coetzee and Nolan McCarthy each had two-hit games to pace the Growler offense which had 10 hits.

The Bombers fall to 2-3 in the second half and 15-24 overall. The win for the Growlers improves their overall record to 16-26 was their first win of the second half after dropping their first five second half games.
