February 10, 2003 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Oklahoma City Blazers News Release
Oklahoma City skated in three games last week, winning once and losing twice. Oklahoma City hosted the Wichita Thunder on February 7 and won 6-4. Oklahoma City was defeated 6-2 by the Tulsa Oilers on February 8 and 4-2 by the Amarillo Gorillas on February 9 in Amarillo. The Blazers is now 29-16-2, with 60 points and in second place in the Northwest Division of the CHL, three points behind Tulsa.
TWO AND FOUR MEANS A WIN FOR THE BLAZERS - Oklahoma City skated against Wichita on February 7 at home. A four-goal second period boosted the Blazers to a 6-4 win. Dave Shields led the way for Oklahoma City with three points (1-2-3). Peter Arvanitis picked up two power-play goals on the night. Rookie goaltender Ghyslain Rousseau stopped 24 of 28 shots for his first win as a pro.
TWO, TWO AND TWO SPELLS SECOND PLACE FOR OKLAHOMA CITY - Oklahoma City took on the Tulsa Oilers on February 8 at home. Two goals allowed in each period spelled a 6-4 loss for Oklahoma City and a trip back to second place for the Blazers. Joe Burton and Marty Standish scored the Blazers only goals in the loss. Oilers speedy forward Aaron Millar had three assists to lead the Oilers. Boyd Ballard stopped 21 of 27 shots for the loss.
GORILLAS CAGE BLAZERS - Oklahoma City made its final trip to Amarillo during the regular season on February 9 and were treated to a 4-2 loss. Dave Shields and Ryan Watson scored goals for the Blazers. Blair Manning added an assist to extend his point-scoring streak to six games. Goaltender Ghyslain Rousseau stopped 26 of 30 shots in the loss. Henry Kuster (2-1-3) and Mark DeSantis (1-2-3) each had three points for Amarillo.
FOUR PERIODS OF TWO GOALS- Saturday and Sunday weren't much fun for Oklahoma City. In the losses on those days, Oklahoma City gave up two goals in four consecutive periods. Extending that futher, in nine periods over last weekend, the Blazers allowed two goals in seven of the nine.
ARVANITIS PASSES BLAZERS MILESTONE- Blazers centerman Peter Arvanitis' picked up two power-play goals against Wichita on February 7. Those two goals gave him goals 99 and 100 in his Blazers career. He is just the sixth player in Blazers history to score 100 goals. His 19 goals for the season ties a career high set during the 2000-01 campaign. Lastly, his nine power-play goals this season is the total he had on the power play in the last two seasons combined.
STANDISH RECORDS MILESTONE GOAL - Just one day after Peter Arvanitis recorded his 100th goal as a member of the Blazers, Marty Standish joined that exclusive club as well. Standish's short-handed goal on February 8 against Tulsa was his 100th in a Blazers sweater. He joins Arvanitis and is the seventh player to record 100 goals as a Blazer
BORSHEIM WITH TWO SHORT-HANDED ASSISTS - Blazers defenseman Les Borsheim, noted for his physical play, cashed in over the weekend. He recorded an assist in two straight games, with both coming on short-handed goals. His two assists over the weekend doubled his assist total for the season. His two short-handed points puts him in a tie with three others for second on the team in that category.
JERSEYS AUCTION OVER - The All-Star jerseys auction is officially over. The auction grossed $11,713. The proceeds from the auction will be donated to various Blazers charities. The top grossing jersey was that of Austin Ice Bats captain Kelly Smart. His jersey was purchased for $620.
FIRST PERIOD CRUCIAL - The first period between these two teams has been important all season long. February 8 was no exception. In the previous seven games, Tulsa had outscored Oklahoma City 12-6 in the first period. Tulsa registered two first period goals to the Blazers' zero on February 8.
THREE STRAIGH WITH THREE- IN-THREE - Oklahoma City's next three weekends will be busy. As it did last weekend, the Blazers will skate in three-games-in-three nights in each of the next three weeks. Four of the games are at home with the other five coming on the road. A stern test faces the Blazers this weekend. Oklahoma City travels to Wichita, then Indianapolis, and wraps up the weekend in Memphis.
FINALLY A MAJOR PENALTY - Heading into the game on February 8, Oklahoma City had played in six straight games without recording a major penalty. Mike Payne's fight with Dallas Anderson ended that streak one short of the team record for longest stretch without a major penalty. That mark still stands at seven, set during the 1994-95 season from January 27 to February 8. The six-game string is the longest without a major under head coach Doug Sauter.
