San Angelo Saints News Release
Coming Up This Week â The Saints head back out on the road again this week with games Friday night in Amarillo and Saturday night in Wichita. The ice in the San Angelo coliseum is not available because of the upcoming rodeo â so the team will be practicing in Odessa in the coming weeks.
Week In Review â The Saints went 0-2-0 this week with a pair of road losses to Indianapolis.
Saints in the City â The Saints players continue to participate in Awards Ceremonies for all the San Angelo elementary schools' Accelerated Reader Programs. Saints players will then be back in our elementary schools for "Grades for Blades" programs for the February report cards. We also have players going out to talk to juvenile offenders at our area Juvenile Detention Center and visiting local hospitals.
February 7th / San Angelo 3 - Indianapolis 6 / The Ice opened the scoring and took a 1-0 lead on Ryan Carter's 1st goal of the game. Kori Davison tied it for the Saints later in the period, but the Ice would steal the momentum with a late power-play goal to take a 2-1 lead into the 2nd period. The Ice scored twice more by the mid-point of the 2nd period for a 4-1 lead, but the Saints scored a late goal by Trevor Weisgerber to cut it to 4-2 heading into the 3rd period. A power-play goal by Carter just 1:23 into the 3rd period pretty much put the game away, but each team would add another goal (Jared Dumba, Jarett Metz) for the 6-3 final score. The two teams played pretty evenly throughout the game, but the Ice took advantage of several key Saints mistakes and went 2-for-2 on the power-play to take the win.
February 8th / San Angelo 2 - Indianapolis 3 / The Ice dominated the 1st period and took advantage of a 5-on-3 power-play and a phantom penalty against the Saints to take a 2-0 lead into the 2nd period. Kevin St. Jacques scored his 3rd point of the game (1G, 2A) to put the Ice up 3-0 about 7 minutes into the 2nd period, but the Saints refused to give in â scoring 2 3rd period goals (Troy Mann & Kori Davison) to cut the lead to 3-2. With their goalie pulled, the Saints had several opportunities in the final minute but a couple of great saves by Shawn Silver and a shot of the goalpost denied the Saints any points for the weekend.
Playoff Picture â The Saints playoff hopes grew even dimmer this weekend with their 2 losses. They now stand 15 points out of the final playoff spot with 15 games left to play. Currently Lubbock holds the final slot with 47 points followed by Corpus Christi with 46, New Mexico with 45 and El Paso with 36. There is still some hope if the Saints can go on a winning streak since they still have 3 games left against both Lubbock and Corpus Christi and one against New Mexico to try to make up some ground.
Injury Report â The Saints added Jeff Cheeseman back to the injured list this weekend when he took another slap shot off the same foot he injured in a similar manner earlier in the season. Jan Jas and Kelly Miller also remain out of action. However, Jason Abel is due back off of Injured Reserve this week and could be in uniform for this weekend's games against Amarillo and Wichita.
