John, Carroll Pick up Weekly Honors
February 10, 2003 - Central Hockey League (CHL) News Release
A pair of Northeast Division rivals have been selected as the recipients of the Central Hockey League's Player and Goaltender of the Week for Week 17 of the CHL season. Indianapolis All-Star defenseman Bernie John has earned Player of the Week recognition after enjoying three multiple-point games in three wins for the division leading Ice, while Carroll won all three of his starts for the Mudbugs in receiving Goaltender of the Week accolades. John becomes the first Indianapolis player to receive Player of the Week recognition this season, while Carroll earns his second distinction of the year after also claiming Goaltender of the Week in Week 9.
Perennial CHL All-Star John currently sits second in scoring by defensemen with 51 points, and added nine points in just three games the past week. First, he scored twice and added a pair of assists in a 6-5 win at Wichita February 6th, then added a goal and four assists in back-to-back home wins over the San Angelo Saints over the weekend. John becomes the first defenseman to earn CHL Player of the Week honors this season. The Ice has gone 9-0-1 over their last 10 games, with John totaling 17 points during the streak. In January, the Sudbury, Ontario native was named to his third consecutive All-Star roster.
Bossier-Shreveport goaltender Ken Carroll has continued to lead the Mudbugs in their late-season charge towards a potential playoff berth after a disappointing first half of the season. Carroll started, and earned victories, in all three Mudbugs games the past week, including a 19-save 2-0 shutout at Lubbock February 2nd. The following night he turned aside 22 Buzzards shots in a 7-1 home victory, then made 20 saves in a 4-3 shootout win over visiting New Mexico to give the Mudbugs their sixth consecutive win. The Oil City, Ontario native's outstanding week now has him third amongst CHL starting goaltenders in both goals against average (2.131) and save percentage (92.9).
