Florida Everblades News Release
ESTERO, FL - The Florida Everblades (19-13-5) picked up a tie in the standings for the fourth straight game after falling to the Augusta Lynx (14-19-4) 3-2 in a shootout Tuesday morning at Germain Arena. The 10:30 a.m. game featured over 5,000 Southwest Florida area school children, who were treated to extra hockey.
Florida opened the scoring 5:17 into the game when Matt Hendricks beat Augusta goalie Jason Saal with a wrist shot on the power play. The Everblades held the 1-0 lead until a little over six minutes into the second period when Louis Goulet slipped a shot past 'Blades net-minder Craig Kowalski to tie the game.
Each team scored in the first three minutes of the third period, with the Lynx taking their first lead of the game just 23 seconds into the frame on Jim Shepherd's ninth goal of the season. Chris Lee notched Florida's second power play goal of the day just minutes later at 3:02 evening the teams at two apiece. Despite several chances, including a 5-on-3 power play for 18 seconds late in the period, the Everblades couldn't find the back of the net, forcing the game into overtime. For the fourth straight game, Florida failed to gain the extra point, falling in the shootout after neither team tallied the game-winner in the five-minute overtime period. In the five-round shootout, Tom Reimann gave Florida the early 1-0 advantage, but goal for Augusta in the third and fourth rounds were the difference. Goulet netted the eventual game-winner zinging a shot over Kowalski's glove.
Kowalski picked up a tie in the standings for Florida bringing his record to 11-6-4, after stopping 28 of 30 in regulation and overtime, but allowing two goals on five shootout attempts. Saal earned the win with 28 saves as well in regulation and overtime, and stopping four of five Florida shooters. The Everblades saw their record fall to 2-1 in shootouts this season, while the Lynx climbed to 3-3 in shootouts.
The Everblades closed out the day 2-for-7 on the power play, while the Lynx finished 0-for-7 on the man advantage. Florida returns to action on Friday, January 21 when they host the Gwinnett Gladiators at 7:30 p.m. at Germain Arena.
