Blades Fans Make a Difference on Star Wars Night
December 3, 2015 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Saskatoon Blades News Release
When the Saskatoon Blades and PotashCorp set out to host Star Wars Night on November 28th against the Edmonton Oil Kings, there was something much more important going on than just another hockey game. The night's focus was to raise awareness, funds, and product for food banks across Saskatchewan.
The fans who packed SaskTel Centre for the Saskatoon Blades Star Wars night have made a huge contribution to the battle against hunger. The buzz surrounding the one of a kind Star Wars jerseys led to a very successful silent auction which, in turn, led to a huge donation to the Food Banks of Saskatchewan. Today, the Saskatoon Blades are handing over a cheque for $18.128.64, which is being matched by their partner, PotashCorp, for a total donation of $36,257,28.
Executive Director Laurie O'Connor is thrilled with the fantastic turnout and the level of support:
"On behalf of our board of directors, volunteers and staff, I would like to express my utmost appreciation to the fans, the Saskatoon Blades and PotashCorp for making this very special event such an outstanding success"
"We're thrilled our fans stepped up in such force in this serious challenge facing communities across Saskatchewan," said Blades President, Steve Hogle. "We've had wonderful partners in this project, from Lucasfilm to PotashCorp, and we are grateful we formed a formidable force to help the food banks level a blow against hunger."
The Blades are very grateful for the support from Blades fans who donated nearly a thousand pounds of food as well as cash donations for the Food Bank. They would also like to thank PotashCorp for being a tremendous partner and having such a great presence and influence in the community.
"The Blades scored a hat trick with this event. They filled the stands, raised a phenomenal $18,000 for the Food Bank, and collected a bumper crop of food in their collection bins. Those are great stats for a caring community partner." added Randy Burton, Director, Public Relations & Communications with PotashCorp.
Star Wars Night was a wildly successful evening, and the Blades, Potash Corp, and the Saskatoon Food Bank would like to thank all the fans who attended who made it a very memorable event.
The Blades are so grateful to be able to make a donation such as this to such a wonderful cause. If you would like more information on the Food Banks of Saskatchewan, please visit http://www.skfoodbanks.ca/, or visit the Saskatoon Food Bank at 202 Avenue C South.
