Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, MB. - The General Manager of the National Hockey League's Winnipeg Jets, who served as Brandon's captain in the late eighties will headline the list of speakers for the 2016 Wheat Kings' CKLQ Sportsman's Dinner, scheduled for Thursday, February 4th in the Keystone Centre's UCT Pavillion.
Kevin Cheveldayoff is currently in his fifth season as General Manager of the Jets. During the 2014-15 campaign, he helped to lead the club to a 43-26-13 record and a franchise record 99 points and a berth in the Stanley Cup playoffs for the first time since the club relocated to Winnipeg in 2011.
"Chevy" will be joined at this year's dinner by the Television voice of the Jets Dennis Beyak and Toronto comedian Dave Hemstad.
Before arriving in Winnipeg, Cheveldayoff spent two seasons with the Chicago Blackhawks, serving as the club's Assistant General Manager and Senior Director of Hockey Operations. Prior to that, the Blaine Lake, Saskatchewan native spent 12 seasons as General Manager of the American Hockey League's Chicago Wolves, guiding the franchise to four league championships. Overall, the former first round draft choice of the New York Islanders, has been a part of seven league championships during his 15-year management career.
Known as a defensive defenceman during his playing days, a knee injury cut his professional career short after five seasons.
As a Wheat King, "Chevy" played four seasons in Brandon, playing a total of 214 games, scoring twelve goals, 81 points and accumulating 715 minutes in penalties, ranking him sixth on the club's alltime list.
Born and raised in the small farming community of Winnipegosis, Beyak began his broadcasting career with the WHL's Flin Flon Bombers. Since then, he has provided play by play commentary for the Saskatoon Blades, Seattle Thunderbirds and Victoria Cougars, the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League and had been the primary radio voice of the Toronto Maple Leafs since 1998 when he took over TSN's play by play duties with the Jets.
In addition to radio, Beyak has called the IIHF World Hockey Championships.
Beyak's 41-year sports career also includes stints outside the broadcast booth, as he was the assistant General Manager of the Blades, the GM of both the TBirds and Tri-City Americans. He also served as chairman of the Memorial Cup in Saskatoon (1989) and Seattle (1992) and was named the League's Executive of the Year in 1989.
Called a "Canadian Master" by Just for Laughs, Hemstad meanwhile has skyrocketed to the top of the national comedy scene, appearing regularly across the country, not to mention a wide variety of television projects.
Brashly confident on stage with clean, refreshing motivational humour, he muses on daily life, modern world frustrations and social tensions that we all experience.
A regular on CBC's The Debators, Hemstad has been a regular guest on Connect with Mark Kelly and The Strombo Show. He has over ten festival appearances, including the prestigious Just for Laughs in Montreal as well as the Festivals in both Halifax and Winnipeg.
A comedic genius, he was recently voted Best Comedian in Canada by the Canadian Organization of Campus Activities.
Tickets to this year's event are $120 each and can be ordered by calling the Wheat Kings at (204) 726-3535. For more information on the event, its history as well as the WHL Scholarship Foundation, be sure to check out the club's official website located at www.wheatkings.com.
