Blades Break Out Offensively Against Ice
October 7, 2009 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Saskatoon Blades News Release
A five-goal first period paced the Saskatoon Blades to an 8-4 victory over the Kootenay Ice at Credit Union Centre on Wednesday night.
Curtis Hamilton (Kelowna, BC) opened the scoring just 15 seconds into the game with a backhanded shot in front of the Kootenay goal for his second of the season.
The Blades went up 2-0 two minutes later on Jeremy Boyer's (Saskatoon, SK) first goal and point in a Blades' uniform as the recent acquisition redirected a Travis Toomey (Leduc, AB) shot into the Kootenay goal.
Overager Walker Wintoneak (Flin Flon, MB) put the Blades up 3-0 with a power play goal, cleaning up a rebound in front of the Ice net and going five-hole for his second of the season.
Burke Gallimore (Edmonton, AB) picked up his team leading fourth of the season two minutes later after cutting to the front of the Kootenay net from the left corner and going high blocker side.
The Blades struck one last time to close out the period as Gaelan Patterson (Saskatoon, SK) put home his second on the season.
The second period opened again with a Blades' marker as Jyri Niemi (Hameenkyro, Finland) fired home a cannon from the blue line for his first of the season on the power play.
Kootenay would get on the board midway through the second as Brock Montgomery deposited a rebound past Adam Morrison (White Rock, BC).
The Blades would go up 7-1 on Niemi's second of the night, another heavy shot from the Finnish defenseman and this time from the right faceoff circle that squeaked through Kootenay goaltender Todd Matthews.
The Ice answered back with a pair of markers, one to end off the second by defenseman James Martin and one to open the third period by forward Kevin King.
The Blades made it 8-3 after Boyer deked out Matthews on the edge of the crease, giving Hamilton an empty net to shoot at, to which the third-year Blade made no mistake.
Kootenay closed out the scoring late in the third period on Steele Boomer's third of the season but it was not enough as the Blades came away with an 8-4 win.
Morrison started his seventh straight game of the season for the Blades, stopping 28 of 32 shots for the win. Matthews took the loss for the Ice, surrendering 5 goals on 18 shots in over 42 minutes of work. Nathan Lieuwen came in in relief for Matthews for part of the first period stopping 9 of 12 shots.
With the win the Blades now have a 3-2-0-2 record for 8 points on the season. The Ice, meanwhile, fall to 3-5-0-0 on the season for 6 points.
The Blades now take to the road for four consecutive games. The road trip kicks off this Friday in Red Deer with a matchup against the Rebels. Game time is 7:30 pm. On Saturday, the Bridge City Bunch are in Lethbridge to take on the Hurricanes. Each and every Blades road game can be heard game live on 92.9 The Bull with Les Lazaruk. The live video broadcast of the games will also available for purchase through WHL WebTV.
