Black Bears Complete Sweep against Cyclones with 8-3 Victory

July 23, 2015 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
West Virginia Black Bears News Release

The West Virginia Black Bears completed the sweep against the Brooklyn Cyclones on Thursday night with a 8-3 win at Monongalia County Ballpark. With the win, West Virginia improves to a winning record of 16-15 while Brooklyn falls to 18-14 overall.

The Black Bear offense came out firing early as SS Kevin Newman led off the first inning with a triple hit to deep left-center. DH Maximo Rivera reached on a fielding error later in the inning, scoring Newman to put West Virginia on the board. CF Alexis Bastardo came up with the bases full of Black Bears and delivered a two-run double to extend the lead to 3-0 after one. In the third, 1B Chris Harvey doubled to left-center and then later scored on an RBI single by Bastardo to give West Virginia a 4-0 lead.

LF Ty Moore helped produce another run in the fourth inning by stealing second base, allowing Newman to score from third on the throw attempt. Brooklyn answered back in the fifth inning with a three-run homer to left field, but this would be the only time the Cyclones would score in the game.

The Black Bears once again added on to the lead in the sixth inning in an unusual way. Moore struck out on a dropped third strike and while on third base, 2B Erik Forgione noticed the game speed of the throw to first base and darted for home and beat the tag to complete the successful steal of home. West Virginia received its seventh run on a passed ball before Bastardo grounded out to third to score a run to give the Black Bears a 8-3 margin.

SP Luis Paula picked up the win (2-1) after tossing 5.0 innings, allowing only three runs (all earned) and striking out four while Cyclones starter Kevin Canelon was tagged with the loss (2-2). RP Edgar Santana put up 3.0 scoreless innings in relief and RP John Holdzkom pitched a scoreless ninth inning. Holdzkom is briefly with the Black Bears on a rehab assignment after having shoulder fatigue while pitching with (AAA) Indianapolis.

West Virginia returns to action Friday, July 24 as the team starts a three-game series with the Staten Island Yankees. The Black Bears will send RHP Seth McGarry to the mound on fireworks night at ballpark, provided Unifirst.
