Lowell Spinners News Release

LOWELL, MASS. - For the first time in 2015 the Lowell Spinners are no longer in first place in the Stedler Division, giving up their share of the lead with a 4-2 loss to the Tri-City ValleyCats Friday night at LeLacheur Park.

Lowell (17-16) scored first, jumping out to an early 2-0 lead. The Spinners loaded the bases with no outs and after a Victor Acosta pop-out, Chad De La Guerra doubled down the left field line to plate a pair but Andrew Benintendi was caught in a pickle and thrown out for the innings second out.

Tri-City (17-16) pulled even in the second inning on a run scoring triple from Aaron Mizell and RBI groundout from Anthony Hermelyn, tying the score at two.

The Spinners had a chance to re-take the lead in the second after a one-out double by Jeremy Rivera put two men in scoring position. A Luis Alexander Basabe strike out and Tate Matheny ground out ended the threat with the score still tied at two.

The ValleyCats returned the favor in the sixth inning, leaving the bases loaded in the sixth inning after Randy Perez came out of the bullpen to record the inning's final two outs and leave the score even at two.

The Lowell magic ran out in the seventh inning after a one-out error by De La Guerra put a pair of runners on. An infield single loaded the bases and a wild pitch gave the ValleyCats a 3-2 lead. One batter later a sacrifice fly extended the lead to a pair and the Spinners could pull no closer, falling, 4-2.

Acosta had the only two hit night for the Spinners while De La Guerra had both RBI with his team best ninth double of the season.

Luis Ramos allowed two runs in 5.1 innings, striking out a pair. Perez (0-2, 1.62) got out of one jam but could not escape the other, picking up the loss with two runs, one earned, on a hit and two walks in an inning plus. Trevor Kelley allowed an inherited runner to score, but was otherwise unscathed in 1.2 innings, striking out one. Edwar Garcia pitched a scoreless ninth to give the Spinners a chance to win.

The Spinners will look to get back on track when the Auburn Doubledays, a Washington Nationals affiliate, arrive in town Friday night. It's Fireworks Friday Night and Jake Cosart (1-2, 6.86) gets the ball for the 7:05 first pitch.
