Scrappers Fall to Staten Island 12-4
July 23, 2015 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Mahoning Valley Scrappers News Release
Going for their fourth straight win and a series sweep, the Mahoning Valley Scrappers (13-19) came up short against the Staten Island Yankees (19-13). Staten Island won the third game of the series 12-4 on Thursday night at Eastwood Field.
Staten Island jumped out first. In the top of the second, Junior Valera singled to left to score Ryan Krill and Zack Zehner. Mahoning Valley didn't respond until the fourth, when Jodd Carter doubled to score Emmanuel Tapia.
The Scrappers hung in, until things went crazy in the seventh. Dominic DeMasi had a solid sixth in relief of Kieran Lovegrove, but DeMasi allowed six runs in the seventh, on four hits. Ryan Perez came in for the last out. He allowed a single to Krill to score Thairo Estrada and Jhalan Jackson. Krill advanced to second on a throwing error by Jodd Carter and a fielding error at the same time. The first run scored on the fielding error, and the second on the throwing error. Perez walked Zehner and struck out Brandon Wagner to stop the bleeding.
Mahoning Valley did what it could to strike any sort of a comeback. In the bottom of the seventh, Austin Fisher singled to right. He advanced to second on an error by Jackson. Silento Sayles was hit by a pitch, and Willi Castro singled to right. With the bases loaded, Connor Marabell hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Fisher. Both runners moved up a base. Mark Mathias hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Sayles, but Tapia struck out to end the inning.
Staten Island did add four more in the ninth against Jimmy Stokes, but the bats went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the ninth.
Lovegrove (1-3) takes the loss. He went five innings giving up four hits and two runs, both earned. He only walked one, and struck out three. Lovegrove's outing was solid, despite his second inning. He struggled a little with command early in the count.
Luis Cedeno (4-2) took the win for Staten Island. He went five innings giving up five hits and one earned run. He walked two, and struck out four.
Mathias, Castro, and Daniel Salters all extended their hitting streaks. Walks hurt Mahoning Valley pitching again. The Scrappers gave up eight walks and had four errors defensively in the field behind the pitching staff. This loss almost puts them in the same shoes as Williamsport when Mahoning Valley won on July 20 in Williamsport. The Crosscutters pitching staff struggled with command and errors. This game was the same issue, with the Scrappers ending up on the losing end.
Mahoning Valley still won the series two games to one. The Scrappers host the Brooklyn Cyclones for a three-game set beginning Friday night at Eastwood Field. Leandro Linares takes the hill for the Scrappers at 7:05.
