Tri-City ValleyCats News Release
LOWELL, MA - Scott Weathersby struck out a career-high seven batters over four scoreless innings, as the Tri-City ValleyCats rebounded from an early deficit en route to defeating the Lowell Spinners 4-2 in the third game of a three-game series on Thursday night, and now stand alone in first place in the New York-Penn League Stedler Division.
The 'Cats and Spinners began the three-game set on Tuesday night tied in the standings with identical 16-14 records, and just like the first two contests, which were one-run affairs, the series finale was close from beginning to end.
Lowell struck first, pushing two runs across in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI double by Spinners second baseman Chad De La Guerra.
However, the ValleyCats wasted little time tying the game up at 2-2, when Aaron Mizell drove home Bobby Wernes with a triple to deep right field in the top of the second, then scored on an RBI by Anthony Hermelyn.
Right-handed starter Trent Thornton kept the Lowell batters at bay after the bottom of the first, tossing a total of 4.2 innings, striking out two batters and not allowing any runs in his final three frames.
Left-handed reliever Zach Davis entered the game with two outs in the bottom of the fifth, and struck out the only batter he faced before giving way to Weathersby, who pitched the final four scoreless frames for the 'Cats.
He was rewarded for his work in the top of the seventh, when Brooks Marlow scored on a wild pitch, then Wernes drove home Johnny Sewald with a sacrifice fly to right field, giving Tri-City a 4-2 lead that would hold for the rest of the game.
The ValleyCats will now head to Western New York to take on the Batavia Muckdogs in the second leg of their six-game road trip. On the mound for Tri-City in Friday's series opener will be RHP Dean Deetz (4-1, 1.44), with LHP Scott Squier (1-0, 7.29) getting the start for Batavia.
