Doubledays Run into Trouble at Vermont

BURLINGTON, VT - The Doubledays dropped game two of a three-game series with the Lake Monsters 6-2 on the road.

It didn't take long for the Lake Monsters to take the lead. In the bottom of the first, Steven Pallares led off with an infield single. The speedy outfielder scored two batters later when Mikey White hit a double into left to give Vermont a 1-0 lead. Two batters after White, Seong-min Kim knocked in White with a single into center and it was 2-0 Lake Monsters. Taylor Guilbeau started for the Doubledays and gave up two more singles to load the bases with two outs before forcing Trace Loehr to ground out to end the first.

After a scoreless second, Auburn tied it up in the third. Luis Guzman led off with a double into left and moved over to third on a sacrifice bunt from Edwin Lora. Victor Robles stepped up next and drove in Guzman with a single to left. Robles then moved over to third when Max Schrock hit a bloop single into center. After Rhett Wiseman popped out to third, David Kerian drove in Robles with a single to right to tie the game up at 2-2.

Neither team scored in the fourth before the Lake Monsters took a 5-2 lead in the fifth. Pallares led off with a fly out to right before Richie Martin singled, White singled, and Chris Iriart doubled to give Vermont a 4-2 lead. The double from Iriart also knocked Guilbeau out of the game with the following line: 4.1 IP, 9 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 0 BB, and 3 K's. Guilbeau was replaced by John Feliz who gave up an RBI single to Seth Brown to put the score at 5-2 before forcing Skye Bolt to ground into an inning-ending double play.

The sixth and seventh went by quickly also both teams managed just one base runner before the Lake Monsters extended their lead in the eighth. With Matt Pirro on the mound for the Doubledays, Bolt singled to right with one out. Bolt advanced all the way to third on a pair of stolen bases before Loehr drove in him with a single to left.

In the ninth the Doubledays sent 6-7-8 to the plate and were retired on a double play and a ground out to second to end the game.

The Lake Monsters were led to victory by their bullpen. Three relievers combined for the following line: 6.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, and 4 K's. Guilbeau earned his first loss of the season while Kevin Ferreras earned the victory with the following line: 3.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, and 2 K's.

The Doubledays look to take the rubber match Thursday at 7:05 PM and send Erick Fedde (2-1, 2.45 ERA) to the mound to face Jonathan Massad (2-2, 3.62 ERA) for the Lake Monsters.
