Buffalo Bisons News Release
It's been a tough homestand for the Bisons, who fell for the fifth straight night to the Worcester Red Sox, 7-6, Saturday evening from Sahlen Field. WooSox shortstop Jack Lopez hit an RBI-triple in the eighth inning for the game-winning run that dropped the Bisons to 56-41 on the season.
In a game that featured four ejections and a number of close calls, the Herd rallied from down 4-0 and 6-4 to tie the score twice, but still failed to take its first lead of the series. Then, with the Bisons trailing 7-6 in the ninth inning, manager Casey Candaele was ejected along with catcher Juan Graterol and Worcester centerfielder Delino DeShields when the benches cleared following some chatter from both dugouts.
Bisons hitting coach Corey Hart was later ejected in the bottom of the ninth following a close play at first base.
Long before that, it appeared a slow start would doom the Herd again as three of the first four WooSox hitters of the game scored and Worcester increased their lead in the fourth on Chris Herrmann's solo home run.
But the Bisons sent 10 men to the plate in the fifth inning to tie the game at four. Logan Warmoth was hit by a pitch from Red Sox starter Connor Seabold to start the frame -one of four hit batters by the Bisons, which may have contributed to the hot tempers by game's end. Otto Lopez followed with a one-out but single and Tyler White got the Bisons on the board with a line-drive double into the left-field corner.
Trailing 4-1, rehabbing Blue Jays catcher Danny Jansen then tied the game with a no-doubt three-run homer to left field. The backstop crushed a hanging breaking ball from Seabold half-way up the protective netting in front of Oak St.
Worcester responded with runs in the sixth and seventh inning before the Bisons tied the game again at six in their half of the seventh. Christian Colon led off the inning with a walk and Cullen Large grounded a double to left field to set the Herd up with no outs. Nash Knight's grounder to second and Warmoth's sacrifice fly brought in the runs without the need for a base hit.
But the last rally belonged to the WooSox in the eighth. DeShields drew a one-out walk from Rafael Dolis and then raced to third when the Bisons reliever threw wildly to first on a pick off attempt. With Buffalo having to bring in the outfield in a step or two to prevent a potential sacrifice fly, Lopez flied a triple over Large's head in right field for the game-winning hit.
There was a pair of notable reliever appearances for the Bisons, as both Julian Merryweather and Nate Pearson worked out of the pen on Saturday night. Merryweather struck out two, but also allowed two infield singles and a walk. He was charged with a run when Kyle Johnston relieved him with the bases loaded and hit Lopez for the WooSox's fifth run on the night.
Pearson allowed a run on two hits in the seventh, but also picked up two strikeouts.
The Bisons will look to salvage the final game of the series on Sunday afternoon with a 1:05 p.m. first pitch against the Red Sox.
