Montgomery Biscuits News Release

MONTGOMERY -- On a drizzly night at Riverwalk Stadium, Chris Nowak singled, tripled and homered to power the Montgomery Biscuits (11-4, 46-39) past the visiting Birmingham Barons (4-11, 36-49), 9-4.

Montgomery began the second half on a six-game losing streak, but Monday night's victory continued the team's best-ever start to a half in the club's four-season history. The Biscuits are currently tied for first place in the South Division with the Jacksonville Suns.

Birmingham entered the bottom of the fourth inning in control of a 3-1 lead, but singles from Reid Brignac and Evan Longoria preceded a John Jaso three-run home run that gave the Biscuits a lead they would not relinquish. Four batters later, an RBI double by Erold Andrus knocked out Barons starter Ryan Wing (3-3). Fernando Perez would add a run-scoring double of his own off of reliever Kris Honel to increase the advantage to 6-3 before Birmingham finally retired the side.

An inning later, Nowak crushed his third home run of the season to straightaway centerfield with Longoria aboard to make the score 8-3.

Provided with an extra cushion, Montgomery starter Jon Barratt (2-6) earned the victory with one of his finest outings of the season, allowing three runs on three hits in six innings.

The squads exchanged solo tallies in the eighth to close out the scoring.

In all, the Biscuits hammered out 13 base hits off of four Barons pitchers, including a pair of knocks from Perez, Brignac and Andrus to contribute to Nowak's 3-for-4 night.

Having won two-of-three games in the set thus far, Montgomery will look for the series victory on Tuesday night at 7:05 at Riverwalk Stadium. Biscuits left-hander Mike Prochaska (4-7, 4.55) brings his 21-inning scoreless streak to the mound, opposed by Barons southpaw Wes Whisler (4-9, 5.44).
