Mudcats Too Much for Lookouts
July 2, 2007 - Southern League (SL1)
Chattanooga Lookouts News Release
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Monday night proved to be a tough one for the Lookouts, as the Carolina Mudcats snatched two wins from the Lookouts in one day.
Both teams resumed play of Sunday's rain-induced, suspended game. With only one out needed to complete the game, Luis Bolivar promptly grounded out to short to give the Mudcats the 1-0 win.
The Mudcats got off to a quick lead in the second game and staved off several Lookouts' big rally attempts to come away with a 10-5 win. Carolina powered their way to an early lead, as a Grant Psomas shot off of Carlos Fisher (2-4) gave the Mudcats a 1-0 lead.
A more gradual approach to scoring was implemented by Carolina in the third. After five singles and a walk without an out recorded, the dust settled, and the Mudcats found themselves with a 4-0 lead.
The Mudcats returned to a more efficient scoring approach in the fifth, when a solo shot off of the bat of Frank Moore extended their lead, 5-0.
Chattanooga countered in the bottom portion of the fifth with a run of their run. After a leadoff triple from Adam Rosales, Luis Bolivar followed with a run-resulting sac fly to center.
Carolina blew the game open in the sixth with four additional runs. A two-RBI Eric Riggs' double and two-run homer from Grant Psomas highlighted the big innings for the Mudcats.
Despite facing a 9-1 deficit, the Lookouts continued to fight and chip into the Mudcats' lead. With two outs already on the scoreboard in the seventh, Adam Rosales began the rally with a walk and advanced to third on a Luis Bolivar single. A subsequent passed ball allowed both runners to advance, giving the Lookouts their first run of the inning.
Marland Williams kept the inning rolling with a single to left, advancing Bolivar to third. Pinch hitter Jay Garthwaite proceeded to nail a single to left, scoring Bolivar.
Once again, Carolina widened the gap with a solo shot; this time Chase Lambin did the damage for the Mudcats.
The Lookouts gave it one more shot in the eighth by scoring two more runs on the bat of Jay Bruce, who hit a line-drive, two-run shot over the center field wall. The long ball would turn out to be the final run-resulting play in the game, and the Mudcats came away with a 10-5 win.
The Lookouts and Carolina will wrap-up their series, tomorrow at 6:15 P.M. The Lookouts will feature their annual Independence Day Fireworks at the conclusion of the contest. Tickets are available; however, a sellout is anticipated and fans are encouraged to buy their tickets in advance. Tickets for this game or any other Lookouts' home game can be purchased at the Lookouts Box Office at AT&T Field, online at www.lookouts.com, or by calling (423) 267-4849.
