Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
Salisbury, MD - The Delmarva Shorebirds tripped up in the series finale against Hagerstown, unable to complete a sweep and perfect homestand. Delmarva (30-22) snapped their seven-game winning streak with a 12-2 loss to the first-place Suns on Wednesday morning.
Bidding for their eight straight win, Delmarva looked good from the start. The Shorebirds manufactured a run in the first inning after Mike Yastrzemski led off with a double. Yastrzemski then advanced to third on a flyout to left, and he scored on a grounder from Drew Dosch.
The 1-0 lead did not last long, as Hagerstown scored seven unearned runs off Luc Rennie in the second and third innings. The leadoff batter Carlos Lopez reached on a bobble by Federico Castagnini at second. After a single by Ward and a RBI groundout, the Shorebirds committed another error. A wild throw from Rennie turned a bunt single into another run and two more bases for Greg Zebrack. It was 3-1 when Rafael Bautista collected an RBI on a groundout.
The Suns scored four more unearned runs in the third after Trey Mancini failed to handle a bouncer for the final out of the frame. Instead, Bautista took advantage with a bases-clearing triple to push the lead to 7-1.
Hagerstown coasted from there as Delmarva could not mount a comeback. The Shorebirds plated another in the sixth after a leadoff triple by Gregory Lorenzo. However, Delmarva left two runners on base in each of the fifth, seventh and eighth innings.
The deficit climbed to double digits as the Suns scored twice in the eighth and three runs in the ninth. Bennett Parry allowed his first runs of the year, ending his scoreless streak at 12 1/3 innings.
Austin Voth pitched well in the victory for Hagerstown, improving to 2-3. Luc Rennie settled for his fourth defeat of the year, as only two of the nine runs he allowed were earned.
The Shorebirds will try to start another winning streak as they travel to Lakewood, New Jersey. Left-hander Luis Gonzalez (0-0, 1.80) will start for Delmarva against BlueClaws' right-hander Drew Anderson (3-3, 3.34). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 pm at FirstEnergy Park.
