Game #51

RH Thaddius Lowry (0-2, 3.00) vs. RH Cole Wiper (2-6, 4.43)

Today's Preview: The Intimidators (A, White Sox) play for their first series victory in three weeks when they face the Crawdads (A, Rangers) in the finale of this 3-game series at L.P. Frans Stadium. It's the final game between Kannapolis and Hickory in the first half, and the season-series is knotted 8-8 after the Intimidators shut out the Crawdads, 3-0.

Intimidating Starter: Thaddius Lowry, 19, makes his third start of the season and second against Hickory. He is coming off consecutive losses, including to the Crawdads on May 17 in his season debut (5.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 4 K). He made his pro debut last summer in the Advanced Rookie Appalachian League with Bristol, going 3-5 with a 5.48 ERA in 15 games (seven starts). Lowry began last season in the bullpen, going 1-2 with a 6.35 ERA in eight games before moving into the rotation and going 2-3 with a 5.18 ERA in seven starts. His last outing of 2013 was perhaps his best as he worked a career-high 6.0 scoreless IP in a win on Aug. 27 against Burlington. He struck out a career-high five in a relief appearance on July 9 against Danville. The Sox selected Lowry out of Spring (Texas) High School.

Hickory's Hurler: Cole Wiper, 21, makes his 10th start and fifth against Kannapolis this season. Against the Intimidators, he is 2-2 with a 1.47 ERA (3 ER/18.1 IP) with 18 strikeouts and 10 walks in four starts, while Kannapolis is batting .182 (12-66) against him. Meanwhile Wiper is 0-4 with a 6.66 ERA (18 ER/24.1 IP) in his five starts against the rest of the South Atlantic League. He is tied for the league lead with six losses, including dropping his most recent start to Charleston on May 23. The Rangers selected him in the 10th round of the June 2013 draft out of the University of Oregon where the right-hander went 2-1 with a 7.11 ERA in seven games (three starts) in 2013. He made his professional debut last season with the AZL Rangers, going 3-1 with a 2.13 ERA in 10 games (two starts), striking out 26 batters over 25.1 innings. The Bellevue, Wash., native graduated from Newport High School.

About Last Night: Kannapolis won its first game in over a week by beating Hickory, 3-0, to snap a 7-game losing streak. James Dykstra worked 6.0 scoreless innings on his way to his third win of the year, combining with relievers Jordan Guerrero and Matt Abramson on a 3-hitter. The Intimidators pounded out 12 hits on the night, including Trey Michalczewski's RBI-single in the sixth to chase Hickory starter Tyler Smith from the game. In the seventh, Kannapolis added a pair of runs thanks to heads up base-running by Hunter Jones on a Cleuluis Rondon bunt and a Danny Hayes RBI-single.

Hello Win Column: Tuesday's 3-0 win in Hickory snapped the Intimidators season-long 7-game losing streak (May 19-26). The Intimidators previous win came May 18, also against the Crawdads, when Trey Michalczewski's walk-off sac-fly won the game in the 10th. The losing streak was the longest since the I's dropped eight straight April 25 to May 6, 2013.

3 for Dale: Kannapolis held Hickory to three hits on Tuesday, equaling the lowest total the pitching staff has allowed in a game this season, now done three times. The previous 3-hit game worked by the Intimidators came May 4, also against Hickory.

Shutout: Tuesday's shutout win was the first for Kannapolis since April 29 in the first game of a doubleheader against West Virginia. Carl Thomore won that contest with a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning for a 1-0 win over the Power. Kannapolis has now won three games by shutting out their opponent, including Hickory on April 8 (1-0).

Hot-Hitting Hayes: Danny Hayes went 2-5 on Tuesday, upping his average to .290 (51-176) and hitting safely in his last nine games (since May 18). He is batting .342 (13-38) during this stretch with three doubles, a home run and four RBI. It's the second 9-game hitting streak of the season for Hayes, who also hit safely in nine games April 16-29 (Game 1).

Double Your Pleasure: Jacob Morris tied a South Atlantic League record and set a new franchise mark by recording four doubles in Monday's game, becoming just the seventh Sally Leaguer to accomplish the feat and the first since Lakewood's Jeremy Slayden Aug. 20, 2006. Morris is the first Intimidators with three doubles in a game since Aug. 20, 2012, when Courtney Hawkins collected three against Hagerstown.

Broadcast: This week's series in Hickory can be heard live on IntimidatorsBaseball.com with the Voice of the Intimidators, Josh Feldman. This season, all 70 home games as well as select road games can be heard live on the Intimidators Baseball Network. Today's pregame show begins at 5:45 p.m. with first pitch at 6 p.m.
